[His saying the Exalted: 'And let them weep much.']

[The first interpretation]

10038 - (*) My father narrated to us, [who said] Abu Salih narrated to us, [who said] Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: 'And let them weep much,' he said: 'In the Fire.' It was narrated from al-Hasan, 'Awn al-'Uqayli, Qatadah, and Zayd ibn Aslam that they said: 'In the Hereafter.'

The second interpretation:

10039 - My father narrated to us, [who said] 'Abd Allah ibn Raja' narrated to us, [who said] Isra'il narrated to us, from Isma'il Abu Muhammad al-Hanafi, from Abu Razin regarding the saying of Allah: 'So let them laugh a little,' he said: '[In] the world. And let them weep much,' he said: 'When he dies, he will weep a weeping that will never be cut off.'

10200 - (*) My father narrated to us, [who said] Muqatil ibn Muhammad narrated to us, [who said] Waki' narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Mansur, from Abu Razin, from al-Rabi' ibn Khuthaym regarding His saying: 'So let them laugh a little,' he said: '[In] the world. And let them weep much,' he said: '[In] the Hereafter.'

His saying the Exalted: 'As recompense for what they used to earn.'

10201 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn 'Ali narrated to us, 'Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: 'As recompense for what they used to earn,' he says: 'Their return is to the Fire.'

His saying the Exalted: 'If Allah brings you back to a faction of them.'

10202 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Abu al-Jamahir narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Bashir narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: 'If Allah brings you back to a faction of them, and they ask your permission to go out,' he said: 'It was mentioned to us that they were twelve men, and regarding them was said what was said.'

His saying the Exalted: 'Then say, "You will never go out with me, ever, and you will never fight with me an enemy."'

10203 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed us in what he wrote to me, [who said] my father narrated to us, [who said] my uncle narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas: 'Allah commanded him to go out, and some men stayed behind. Their souls blamed them, so they said: "By Allah, we have not done anything." Three of them set out and caught up with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. When they reached him, they repented, then they returned to Medina, so Allah the Exalted and Majestic revealed: "If Allah brings you back..."'
