I was writing [the Surah of] Bara'ah, and I was placing the pen on my ear when we were commanded to fight. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) began to observe what was being revealed to him, when a blind man came and said: "How is it for me, O Messenger of Allah, and I am blind?" So [the verse] was revealed: "There is no blame upon the weak or the sick or those who do not find anything to spend [in the cause of Allah] if they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger." He replied: "The one who prefers the right of Allah over the right of people. And when two matters occur to him, or a matter of the world and a matter of the Hereafter appear before him, he begins with the one that is for the Hereafter, then he devotes himself to the one that is for the world."
