Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) returned from his expedition, and his path was through the mosque. He passed by them and said: "Who are these people who have bound themselves to the pillars?" A man said: "This is Abu Lubabah and some companions of his. They stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and swore to Allah that they would not release themselves until you are the one who releases them and is pleased with them, and they have acknowledged their sins." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "By Allah, I will not release them until I am commanded to release them, nor will I excuse them until Allah excuses them; they stayed behind and turned away from the Muslims, their struggle, and their Jihad." So Allah, the Almighty and Exalted, revealed: "And others who have acknowledged their sins, they have mixed a righteous deed with another that was evil."
10306 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid narrated to us, Sa'id narrated to us from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And others who have acknowledged their sins, they have mixed a righteous deed with another that was evil," he said: It was mentioned to us that they were seven men who stayed behind from the Expedition of Tabuk. As for four of them, they mixed a righteous deed with another that was evil: Jadd ibn Qays, Abu Lubabah, Khidham, and Aws, and all of them were from the Ansar.
10307 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Thawr informed us from Ma'mar from Qatadah: "And others who have acknowledged their sins, they have mixed a righteous deed with another that was evil," he said: They are a group of those who stayed behind from Tabuk, among them: Abu Lubabah and among them: Jadd ibn Qays; their repentance was accepted. Qatadah said: They are not the three [who were left behind].

10308 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, al-Muharibi narrated to us from Layth from Mujahid: "And others who have acknowledged their sins," it was revealed regarding one man, regarding Abu Lubabah.
10309 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid: "And others who have acknowledged their sins," [this refers to] Abu Lubabah when he said to [the tribe of] Qurayzah what he said, signaling with his hand toward his throat: "Indeed, Muhammad will slaughter you if you descend to him based on his judgment."

10300 - (*) Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to us, my uncle narrated to us from his father from his grandfather from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And others who have acknowledged their sins," he said: They are from the Bedouins.

فَرَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- مِنْ غَزْوَتِهِ وَكَانَ طَرِيقُهُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَمَرَّ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ: مَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ الْمُوَثِّقُونَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ بِالسَّوَارِي؟ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: هَذَا أَبُو لُبَابَةَ وَأَصْحَابٌ لَهُ، تَخَلَّفُوا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- فَعَاهَدُوا اللَّهَ أَنْ لَا يُطْلِقُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ حتي تكون أنت الذين تُطْلِقَهُمْ وَتَرْضَى عَنْهُمْ وَقَدِ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- والله: لَا أُطْلِقُهُمْ حَتَّى أُؤْمَرَ بِإِطْلاقِهِمْ وَلا أَعْذُرُهُمْ حَتَّى يَكُونَ اللَّهُ يُعْذُرُهُمْ، وَقَدْ تَخَلَّفُوا وَرَغِبُوا عَنِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بِأَنْفُسِهِمْ وَجِهَادِهِمْ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: وَآخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا عَمَلا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا.
١٠٣٠٦ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى أَنْبَأَ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ثنا يَزِيدُ ثنا سَعِيدٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَوْلُهُ: وَآخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا عَمَلا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا قَالَ: ذُكِرَ لَنَا أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا سَبْعَةَ رَهْطٍ، تخلفوا عن غزوة تبوك، فأما أربعة: ف خلطوا عَمَلا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا، جَدُّ بْنُ قَيْسٍ، وَأَبُو لُبَابَةَ وَخِذَامٌ، وَأَوْسُ وَكُلُّهُمْ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ.
١٠٣٠٧ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى أَنْبَأَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ: وَآخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا عَمَلا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا قَالَ: هُمْ نَفَرٌ مِمَّنْ تَخَلَّفَ عَنْ تَبُوكَ، مِنْهُمْ: أَبُو لُبَابَةَ، وَمِنْهُمْ: جَدُّ بْنُ قَيْسٍ، تِيبَ عَلَيْهِمْ، قَالَ قَتَادَةُ لَيْسُوا بِالثَّلَاثَةِ.
وَالْوَجْهُ الثَّانِي:
١٠٣٠٨ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ ثنا الْمُحَارِبِيُّ عَنْ لَيْثٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، وَآخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ نَزَلَتْ فِي رَجُلٍ وَاحِدٍ فِي أَبِي لُبَابَةَ.
١٠٣٠٩ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ ثنا شَبَابَةُ ثنا وَرْقَاءُ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، وَآخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ: أَبُو لُبَابَةَ حِينَ قَالَ: لِقُرَيْظَةَ مَا قَالَ، أَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى حَلْقِهِ: إِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا ذَابِحُكُمْ إِنْ نَزَلْتُمْ إِلَيْهِ عَلَى حُكْمِهِ.
وَالْوَجْهُ الثَّالِثُ:
١٠٣٠٠ - (*) أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ ثنا عَمِّي عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَوْلُهُ: وَآخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ قَالَ: هُمْ مِنَ الأَعْرَابِ.
