He (the Prophet, peace be upon him) released them and pardoned them. So they came with their wealth and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, this is our wealth, so give it away as charity on our behalf and seek forgiveness for us.' He replied: 'I have not been commanded to take your wealth.' Then Allah revealed: 'Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase,' the verse.

10308 - Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani narrated to us, Hafs ibn 'Umar informed us, al-Hakam ibn Aban narrated to us from 'Ikrimah, regarding His saying: 'Take from their wealth a charity,' he said: From cattle, camels, sheep, and other than that.

10309 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Bashir narrated to us from Qatadah, regarding His saying: 'Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase,' he said: It was mentioned to us that they were a group of seven men who stayed behind from the expedition of Tabuk. As for four, they are the ones who 'mixed a righteous deed with another that was evil,' and concerning them it was said: 'Take from their wealth a charity,' and they had promised Allah that they would engage in Jihad and give charity.

10300 - (*) Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, in what he wrote to me, Asbagh narrated to us, who said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the saying of Allah: 'Take from their wealth a charity,' and they had promised Allah that they would engage in Jihad and give charity.

10301 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, in what he wrote to me, Asbagh narrated to us, who said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the saying of Allah: 'Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and pray for them. Indeed, your prayer is a comfort for them.' He said: These are people from among the hypocrites, from those who stayed behind from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) in the expedition of Tabuk. They acknowledged their hypocrisy and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have doubted, acted hypocritically, and been uncertain; however, this is a new repentance and a charity we bring forth from our wealth for the sake of Allah.' So Allah (the Almighty and Majestic) said to His Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): 'Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase.'

10302 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Munib narrated to us, Abu Mu'adh al-Nahwi informed us from 'Ubayd ibn Sulayman from al-Dahhak: Then Allah (the Almighty and Majestic) revealed: 'Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase'—from their sins that they committed.
