Ata' ibn Dinar, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr: "And give glad tidings to the believers," meaning: those who believe in what Allah has promised in these verses.
The fourth interpretation:
10048 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn mentioned it, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, 'Ali narrated to us, 'Abd Allah informed us, Suhayl ibn Abi Hazm narrated to us, from Abu Sahl, from al-Hasan: "And give glad tidings to the believers": [namely] those who also do not engage in Jihad.
His saying, the Almighty: "It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists."
10049 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Nu'aym narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu al-Khalil, from 'Ali, who said: I heard a man asking for forgiveness for his parents, and they were polytheists. I said: "Do you ask for forgiveness for your parents when they are polytheists?" He said: "Did Ibrahim not ask for forgiveness for his father?" I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and [the verse] was revealed: "It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives."
10050 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists," [meaning] they used to ask for forgiveness for them until this verse was revealed. When it was revealed, they refrained from seeking forgiveness, yet they did not stop asking for forgiveness for the living until they died. Then Allah revealed: "And Ibrahim's asking of forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he dissociated himself from him," meaning he sought forgiveness for him while he was alive, but when he died, he refrained from seeking forgiveness.
His saying, the Almighty: "Even if they were relatives."
10051 - My father narrated to us, Khalid ibn Khidash narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Wahb narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Ayyub ibn Hani', from Masruq, from 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud, who said: One day, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went out to the graveyards and we followed him. He approached until he sat at a grave among them, and he spoke to it privately for a long time, then he wept, and we wept because of his weeping. Then he stood up, and 'Umar ibn al-Khattab stood up to him and called him, then he called us and said: "What made you weep?" We said: "We wept because of your weeping." He said: "The grave I sat by is the grave of Aminah, and I..."
