I sought permission from my Lord to visit her, and He granted me permission. And I sought permission from my Lord to pray for her, but He did not grant me permission. He revealed: "It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives." So there seized me that which seizes a child for a parent. I had forbidden you from visiting the graves, so visit them, for they remind one of the Hereafter.
10052 - Ahmad ibn Mansur al-Ramadi narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, from his father, who said: When death approached Abu Talib, the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) entered upon him, and with him were Abu Jahl and 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Umayyah. He said: "O uncle, say: 'There is no god but Allah,' a word by which I may argue for you before Allah." Abu Jahl and 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Umayyah said to him: "Do you turn away from the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib?" He said: The last thing he spoke to them was that he said: "Upon the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib." The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "I shall surely seek forgiveness for you as long as I am not forbidden from doing so." Then was revealed: "It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives."
His saying, the Almighty: "After it has become clear to them that they are companions of the Hellfire."
10053 - Musa ibn Abi Musa al-Ansari narrated to us, Harun ibn Hatim narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik, regarding His saying: "The Hellfire," he said: That which is great of the Fire.
His saying: "And Ibrahim's asking of forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him."
10054 - My father narrated to us, Abu Ghassan narrated to us, Qays narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu al-Khalil, who said: I heard 'Ali saying: Allah revealed the excuse of Ibrahim, and said: "And Ibrahim's asking of forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him."
10055 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from Sa'id ibn al-Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Ibrahim continued to ask for forgiveness for his father until he died. When he died, it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, and he did not seek forgiveness for him.
10056 - My father narrated to us, Sahl ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, al-'Anazi narrated to us, from Musa ibn 'Ubaydah, from Muhammad ibn Ka'b, regarding His saying: "And Ibrahim's asking of forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him."
