He said: When Abu Talib fell ill, the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came to him. The Muslims said: 'This is Muhammad seeking forgiveness for his uncle, and Ibrahim sought forgiveness for his father.' He said: So they sought forgiveness for their relatives among the polytheists. He said: Then Allah revealed: "And Ibrahim's asking of forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him." He said: He used to hope for his [father's] guidance during his lifetime, but when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he dissociated himself from him.
10057 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah, from Qatadah, who said: Then Allah excused His Prophet Ibrahim and said: "And Ibrahim's asking of forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him," but when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah because he died in his state of polytheism, he dissociated himself from him.
His saying, the Almighty: "But when it became clear to him."
10058 - Ahmad ibn Mansur al-Ramadi narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, and [he cited] that which I cannot count, from Ibn al-Musayyib, from his father, regarding "But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah," he said: When he died while he was a disbeliever.
10059 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from Qatadah: It became clear to him when he died, and he knew that repentance had been cut off for him.
His saying, the Almighty: "He dissociated himself from him."
10060 - Abu Sa'id narrated to us, Abu Nu'aym narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Habib, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Ibrahim (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to seek forgiveness for his father, but when he died, he did not seek forgiveness for him.
His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, Ibrahim was compassionate."
[The First Aspect]
10061 - 'Amr ibn 'Abd Allah al-Awdi narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Abu Yunus al-Bahili, I heard a man in Mecca—whose origin was Roman—narrate to him from Abu Dharr, who said: A man was circumambulating the House, and in his supplication he was saying: "Owwah, Owwah." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Indeed, he is 'Awwah (compassionate/sighing in supplication)." Abu Dharr said: I went out one night, and suddenly the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was there with a lamp, burying that man.
10062 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, 'Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Shaqiq narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak informed us, 'Abd al-Hamid ibn Bahram informed us, from Shahr ibn Hawshab, from 'Abd Allah ibn Shaddad, who said: A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is the 'Awwah?" He said: "The humble, the one who is earnest in supplication." He said: "Indeed, Ibrahim was compassionate, forbearing."
The Second Aspect:
10063 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, al-A'mash narrated to us, from al-Hakam, from Yahya ibn al-Jazzar, that Abu al-'Ubaydayn asked 'Abd Allah about the 'Awwah, and he said: "The merciful." And it was narrated from Abu Maysarah, al-Hasan, Mujahid, and Qatadah, similar to that.
The Third Aspect:
10064 - My father narrated to us, Abu Nu'aym narrated to us, Hasan ibn Salih narrated to us, from Muslim, from Mujahid, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: The 'Awwah is the one who has certainty (al-muqin).
10065 - Al-Ashajj narrated to us, 'Uqbah narrated to us, from Isra'il, from Jabir, from Mujahid and 'Ikrimah, who said: The 'Awwah means the one who has certainty in the Abyssinian language.
10066 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, from Isra'il, from Abu Mujahid, regarding 'Awwah, he said: A scholar possessing certainty.
The Fourth Aspect:
10067 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his saying: "Indeed, Ibrahim was 'Awwah," he said: He means the oft-returning to repentance (al-tawwab).
10068 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Talhah ibn Sinan narrated to us, from Layth, from Mujahid, who said: The 'Awwab (the one who returns) is the one who turns back to God (al-munib).
The Fifth Aspect:
10069 - It was mentioned from Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, from Ibn Lahi'ah, from al-Harith ibn Yazid, from Abu 'Amir al-Asbahi, from Shufayy ibn Mati', from Abu Ayyub, who said: The 'Awwah is the one who, when he remembers his sins, asks for forgiveness for them.

قَالَ لَمَّا مَرِضَ أَبُو طَالِبٍ أَتَاهُ النَّبِيُّ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ-، فَقَالَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ: هَذَا مُحَمَّدٌ يَسْتَغْفِرُ لِعَمِّهِ وَقَدِ اسْتَغْفَرَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ لأَبِيهِ قَالَ: فَاسْتَغْفَرُوا لِقَرَابَاتِهِمْ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ قَالَ: ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ: وَمَا كَانَ اسْتِغْفَارُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لأَبِيهِ إِلا عَنْ مَوْعِدَةٍ وعدها إياه قَالَ:
كَانَ يَرْجُوهُ فِي حَيَاتَهُ فَلَمَّا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ أَنَّهُ عَدُوٌّ لِلَّهِ تَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُ.
١٠٠٥٧ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى أَنْبَأَ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، ثنا يَزِيدُ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ: ثُمَّ عَذَرَ اللَّهُ نَبِيَّهُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَالَ: وَمَا كَانَ اسْتِغْفَارُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لأَبِيهِ إِلا عَنْ مَوْعِدَةٍ وَعَدَهَا إِيَّاهُ فَلَمَّا تبين له أنه عدو لِلَّهِ لَمَّا مَاتَ عَلَى شِرْكِهِ تَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: فَلَمَّا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ.
١٠٠٥٨ - حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ الرَّمَادِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَنْبَأَ مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزهري ما لا أُحْصِي عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ فَلَمَّا تبين له أنه عَدُوٌّ لِلَّهِ قَالَ: لَمَّا مَاتَ وَهُوَ كَافِرٌ

وَرُوِيَ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ وَالْحَسَنِ، أَنَّهُمَا قَالا: لَمَّا مَاتَ.
١٠٠٥٩ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ: تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ حِينَ مَاتَ، وَعَلِمَ أَنَّ التَّوْبَةَ قَدِ انْقَطَعَتْ مِنْهُ.
