Volume 6 · Page 168And the second aspect:

Translation · EN

The Second View:

10125 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj told us, Waki' told us, from Sufyan, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, who said: "A faction (ta'ifah)" means a man.

His saying, the Almighty: "To gain understanding (li-yatafaqqahu) in the religion."

10126 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah told us, Hajjaj ibn Muhammad told us, from Ibn Jurayj and Uthman ibn 'Ata', from 'Ata' al-Khurasani, from Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "Why then, from every group of them, does not a faction go forth to gain understanding in the religion?" He says: Let a faction go forth, and let a faction remain with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Those remaining with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) are those who gain understanding in the religion and warn their brethren when they return to them from the military expedition, so that they may beware.

10127 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told us, from Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "Why then, from every group of them, does not a faction go forth to gain understanding in the religion?" He means: The military detachments (saraya). When the detachments returned and Quran had been revealed after them, those who stayed behind with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would teach it to them. He said: "Allah has revealed to your Prophet after you some Quran, and we have learned it," and other detachments would learn it. That is the saying of the Almighty: "To gain understanding in the religion," meaning: to learn what Allah has revealed to their Prophet, and they would teach the detachments when they returned to them, so that they may beware.

10128 - My father told us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-A'la told us, Muhammad ibn Thawr told us, from Ma'mar, from al-Hasan regarding "from every group of them a faction to gain understanding in the religion," he said: Let those who went forth gain understanding regarding what Allah shows them of dominance over the polytheists and of victory, and warn their people.

[His saying, the Almighty: "And warn their people."]
