Surah Yunus

The Interpretation of the Surah in which Yunus, peace be upon him, is mentioned. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

His saying, the Almighty and Majestic: Alif-Lam-Ra.

[The First Aspect]

10184 - My father told us, Abu Ghassan told us, Sharik told us, from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib. Sharik said: I think he is only from Abu al-Duha—meaning Muslim ibn Subayh—from Ibn 'Abbas regarding "Alif-Lam-Ra": He said: "I am Allah, I see (ara)."

10185 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj told us, Abu Usamah told us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, regarding "Alif-Lam-Ra": He said: "I am Allah, I see."

The Second Aspect:

10186 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Hudbah ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab told us, 'Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Waqid told us, from his father, from Yazid al-Nahwi, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding "Alif-Lam-Ra": [They are] the letters of al-Rahman (The Most Gracious) scattered. Al-A'mash related it to me and said: Regarding such as this, do not inform us.

It was narrated from Salim ibn 'Abd Allah regarding "Alif-Lam-Ra" and "Ha-Mim-Nun": [They are] the name of al-Rahman broken up.

The Third Aspect:

10187 - My father told us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-A'la told us, Muhammad ibn Nur told us, from Ma'mar, from Qatadah, he said: "Alif-Lam-Ra": [It is] one of the names of the Qur'an.

The Fourth Aspect:

10188 - My father told us, Sahl ibn 'Uthman told us, Yahya ibn Abi Za'idah told us. Ibn Jurayj said: Mujahid said regarding "Alif-Lam-Mim": He said: These are openings with which Allah opens the Qur'an. He said: I asked, "Did you not used to call it a name?" He said: "No."

10189 - Musa ibn Abi Musa al-Khatmi told us, Harun ibn Hatim told us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hammad told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik, regarding his saying: "These" meaning: This.
