10227 - Ahmad ibn 'Umar ibn Abi 'Asim told us, Abu 'Amr told us, Shabib ibn Bashir told us, 'Ikrimah informed us, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying, the Almighty and Exalted: "a painful punishment," he said: "Painful" (alim): everything that inflicts pain.

His saying, the Exalted: "It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases - that you may know the number of years and account [of time]"

10228 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman told us, al-Husayn ibn 'Ali told us, 'Amir ibn al-Furat told us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light," He did not make it in the form of the moon so that the night may be distinguished from the day. This is His saying: "We have erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible that you may seek bounty from your Lord and may know the number of years and the account [of time]" - regarding their difference.
