tree; there was not a tree on earth that the children of Adam would come to without them deriving a benefit from it. He said: They had a benefit in it, and the earth and the trees remained like that until some of the wicked among the children of Adam spoke that great word by saying: "Allah has taken a son." So when they spoke it, the earth shuddered and the trees became thorny.

His saying, the Almighty: "He is the Self-Sufficient; to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth."

10474 - My father told us, Sahl ibn 'Uthman, Abu Malik, 'Amr ibn Hisham, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Exalted is He!" He says: "Subhan" means: "He marveled."

His saying, the Almighty: "You have no authority for this."

10475 - From Ibn 'Abbas, he said: "Every 'sultan' (authority) in the Qur'an is a proof (hujjah)." It was also narrated from 'Ikrimah, Muhammad ibn Ka'b, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, al-Suddi, al-Dahhak, and al-Nadr ibn 'Adiy something similar to that.

His saying, the Almighty: "Do you say about Allah that which you do not know?"

10476 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn al-Munadi informed us, in what Yunus ibn Muhammad al-Mu'addib wrote to me, he said: Sufyan al-Nahwi told us, from Qatadah regarding: "Do you say about Allah that which you do not know?" He said: "It is the statement of falsehood and vanity; and they said about Him that which they do not know."

His saying, the Almighty: "Say, 'Indeed, those who invent falsehood against Allah will not succeed. [It is but] a brief enjoyment in this world.'"

10477 - It was mentioned from Hammad ibn Zayd, from Hisham ibn Hassan, he said: I heard al-Hasan saying: "The enjoyment of this world is little." He said: "May Allah have mercy on a servant who accompanied it according to that."

His saying, the Almighty: "And recite to them the news of Noah, when he said to his people, 'O my people, if my residence has become burdensome to you.'"

10478 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Ibrahim ibn al-Fadl ibn Abi Suwayd told us, Abu 'Awanah told us, from Qatadah, from Anas, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "The first prophet who was sent was Noah, peace be upon him."

And Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la informed us, reading [the text], 'Abd Allah ibn Wahb, Maslamah ibn 'Ulay told us, from Sa'id ibn Bashir, from Qatadah, that Noah was sent from the Peninsula (al-Jazirah)."
