His saying, the Almighty: "But no one believed Moses except some offspring from his people."

10516 - My father (Abu Salih) told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his saying: "offspring from his people," he says: The Children of Israel.

10517 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Safwan told us, from al-Walid, from Khulayd, from Qatadah, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "But no one believed Moses except some offspring from his people," he said: The offspring are the few.

10518 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Abu al-Jumahir told us, Ibn Wahb told us, Ibn Zayd—meaning 'Abd al-Rahman—informed me, from his father, Zayd ibn Aslam, that he said regarding this verse: "But no one believed Moses except some offspring from his people, in fear of Pharaoh," he said: Pharaoh used to slaughter the boys. When the affair of Moses—peace be upon him—took place, at the time when Moses struck (the ground) with his staff while he was sitting and worshipping with him, he (Pharaoh) drove him out. Then he refrained from killing the offspring of the Children of Israel, realizing that he (Moses) was the one for whom he had been killing the offspring of the Children of Israel. So a new generation grew up during that interval until Moses came from Madyan when Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, sent him as a messenger. This is the offspring of whom Allah said: "But no one believed Moses except some offspring from his people, in fear of Pharaoh."

His saying, the Almighty: "in fear of Pharaoh."

10519 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj told us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the saying of Allah: "and their chiefs (mala'ihim)," he said: This is one (type of expression); the Qur'an was revealed in the dialect of the Arabs. His saying: "And indeed, Pharaoh was a tyrant in the land," he says: He acted arrogantly in the land.

His saying, the Almighty: "And Moses said, 'O my people, if you have believed in Allah, then rely upon Him, if you should be Muslims.'"

10520 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas, the freed slave of the Banu Hashim, told us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr Zunayj told us, Salamah told us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: Meaning "rely upon Allah," that is, I am content with Him over the servants.

His saying, the Almighty: "So they said, 'Upon Allah do we rely.'"

10521 - And by the same chain, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: And upon Allah, not upon people, so let the believers rely."
