His saying, Exalted is He: "Have you made the providing of water to the pilgrims"

10061 - My father narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Sulayman al-Wasiti narrated to us, Sinan ibn Harun narrated to us from Hajjaj from 'Ata' regarding "Have you made the providing of water to the pilgrims," he said: It is Zamzam.

His saying, Exalted is He: "And the maintenance of al-Masjid al-Haram"

10062 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed us—in what he wrote to me—my father narrated to us, my uncle narrated to us from his father from his grandfather from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Have you made the providing of water to the pilgrims and the maintenance of al-Masjid al-Haram," and that is because the polytheists said: "The maintenance of the House of Allah and attending to the water supply is better than he who believed and strove (in the cause of Allah)." They used to boast about the Sacred Mosque and were arrogant because they were its inhabitants and maintainers. So Allah, the Exalted, mentioned their arrogance and their turning away, and said to the people of the Sacred House from among the polytheists: "My verses used to be recited to you, but you used to turn back on your heels, arrogant with respect to it, conversing by night and speaking evil."

His saying, Exalted is He: "like one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and strives in the cause of Allah"

10063 - My father narrated to us, Abu Tawbah al-Rabi' ibn Nafi' narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salam narrated to us from Zayd ibn Salam that he heard Abu Salam saying: Nu'man ibn Bashir narrated to me, he said: I was by the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and a man said: "I would not care to perform any deed after Islam except giving water to the pilgrims." Another said: "Except maintaining al-Masjid al-Haram." And another said: "Jihad in the cause of Allah is better than what you said." 'Umar ibn al-Khattab rebuked them and said: "Do not raise your voices near the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and it is Friday. But when I pray Friday, I will enter and ask him regarding what you differed about." Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: "Have you made the providing of water to the pilgrims and the maintenance of al-Masjid al-Haram like one who believes in Allah and the Last Day..." to the end of the verse.

10064 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us from Ibn Abi Khalid and Zakariyya from al-Sha'bi, he said: 'Ali, al-'Abbas, and Shaybah spoke regarding the water supply and the guardianship (of the Ka'bah), so Allah, the Exalted, revealed: "Have you made the providing of water to the pilgrims and the maintenance of al-Masjid al-Haram like one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and strives in the cause of Allah."
