Translation · EN

His saying, the Exalted: "And His Throne was upon the water."

10697 - Ahmad ibn Sinan told us, Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri told us, Sufyan told us, from al-A‘mash, from Ibn ‘Amr, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding "And His Throne was upon the water," [he was asked]: "What was the water upon?" He said: "Upon the expanse of the wind."

10698 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah told us, Shababah told us, Warqa' told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And His Throne was upon the water" [meaning] before He created anything.

10699 - My father told us, Hisham ibn Khalid told us, Shu‘ayb ibn Ishaq told us, Sa‘id told us, from Qatadah regarding his saying: "And His Throne was upon the water," [he said]: "He, Blessed and Exalted, informs you how the beginning of His creation was, before He created the heavens and the earth."

10700 - My father told us, Sahl ibn ‘Uthman told us, ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Musa told us, from Abu Ja‘far al-Razi, from al-Rabi‘, from Anas regarding "And His Throne was upon the water," he said: "His Throne was upon the water. When He created the heavens and the earth, He divided that water into two parts—that which His Throne had been upon—and He placed one half beneath the Throne, and it is the filled sea."

10701 - Abu Zur‘ah told us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, Bishr ibn ‘Umarah reported to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas, [who said]: "The Throne was only named 'Throne' (‘Arsh) because of its loftiness."

10702 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah told us, Abu Usamah told us, Isma‘il ibn Abi Khalid told us, who said: I heard Sa‘d al-Ta'i say: "The Throne is a red jacinth."

It was read to Bahr ibn Nasr al-Khawlani al-Masri, Asad ibn Musa told us, Yusuf ibn Ziyad told us, from Abu Ilyas, the son of Wahb's daughter, from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said: "Indeed, Allah created the Throne from His light."

10703 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Muhammad ibn ‘Isa told us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl told us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: "He is the One who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and His Throne was upon the water. It was as He described Himself, Blessed and Exalted; there was nothing except the water, upon it was the Throne, and upon the Throne is the Lord of Majesty, Honor, Might, Authority, Sovereignty, Power, Forbearance, Knowledge, Mercy, and Retribution, the Doer of whatever He wills."
