His saying, the Exalted: "That He may test you, which of you is best in deed."

10704 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Muhammad ibn al-Mutawakkil told us, Dawud told us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir told us, from Qatadah regarding "that He may test you" (li-yabluwakum), meaning: that He may inform you.

His saying: "Which of you is best in deed."

10706 - ‘Ali ibn al-Mubarak informed us in what he wrote to me, Zayd ibn al-Mubarak told us, Abu Thawr told us, from Ibn Jurayj regarding His saying: "That He may test you," he said: "The two weighted ones (jinn and mankind)."

10705 - Ahmad ibn Yahya ibn Malik told us, Dawud ibn al-Muhabbar told us, ‘Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad told us, from Kulayb ibn Wa'il, from Ibn ‘Umar, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited: "Which of you is best in deed," then he said: "Which of you is best in intellect, most abstinent from the forbidden things of Allah, and swiftest among you in obedience to Allah."

10706 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Abu al-Jumahir told us, Khalid ibn Nizar told us, Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad told us, from Abu ‘Ajlan, who said: Allah said: "That He may test you, which of you is best in deed," and He did not say: "most in deed."

10707 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Hafs ibn ‘Umar al-Mihraqani told us, Mu’ammal ibn Isma‘il told us, who said: I heard Sufyan say: "That He may test you, which of you is best in deed: the most ascetic among you regarding the world."

10708 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Muhammad ibn al-Mutawakkil told us, Rawwad told us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir told us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Which of you is best in deed," meaning: which of you is most complete in deed.

His saying, the Exalted: "And if you say, 'Indeed, you are resurrected after death.'"

10709 - Muhammad ibn Sa‘d informed us in what he wrote to me, my father told us, my paternal uncle told us, from his father, from ‘Atiyyah, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "Those who disbelieved would surely say, 'This is not but obvious magic.'" [He said: It would only] increase them in denial.

His saying, the Exalted: "And if We delay from them the punishment."

He said: He said, "delay" (akhkharna), meaning: We withheld.

10710 - Abu Zur‘ah told us, Minjab told us, Bishr ibn ‘Umarah told us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding His saying: "The punishment," he said: "A chastisement."
