11098 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj told us, Ishaq ibn Mansur told us, from al-Hakam ibn 'Abd al-Malik, from Qatadah, he said: The village of Lot, where Gabriel lifted it, had four hundred thousand [inhabitants], and the inhabitants of the heaven could hear the barking of the dogs and the sounds of the roosters, then he overturned it, making its lowest part its highest.
11099 - My father told us, Hisham ibn Khalid told us, Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq told us, Ibn Abi 'Arubah told us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "So when Our command came, We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest." It was mentioned to us that it was a third of the villages, containing in it as many as Allah willed of great numbers. It was mentioned to us that it contained four million [people], and it was Sadum, a village between Medina and the Levant.
His saying, the Exalted: "And rained upon it."
11100 - My father told us, al-Husayn ibn 'Umar ibn Shaqiq al-Jarmi told us, Ja'far ibn Sulayman told us, from Abu 'Imran al-Jawni, from 'Abd Allah ibn Rabah, from Ka'b: "And rained upon it stones of layered baked clay [sijjil]." He said: It was upon the people in their assemblies, those calling to them, and their travelers, so not one of them escaped.
His saying, the Exalted: "Of sijjil [layered baked clay]."
[The first interpretation]
11101 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj told us, Hafs al-Mukattib told us, from Idris, from 'Atiyyah, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding: "stones of sijjil," he said: Hard and solid.
11102 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah told us, Shababah told us, Warqa' told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And rained upon it stones of sijjil," he said: In Persian, it is composed of "stone" [sanj] and "clay" [gil]. It has been narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, al-Suddi, and Matar al-Warraq similarly.
11103 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Sahl ibn 'Uthman told us, Yahya ibn Abi Za'idah told us, from Isra'il, from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from 'Ikrimah, regarding His saying: "stones of sijjil," he said: It has a name in Nabataean and a name in Persian.
The second interpretation:
11104 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah told us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "stones of sijjil," he says: From clay. It was narrated from 'Ikrimah and Ibn Sabit similarly.
١١٠٩٨ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ: قَرْيَةُ لُوطٍ حَيْثُ رَفَعَهَا جِبْرِيلُ وَفِيهَا أَرْبَعُمِائَةِ أَلْفٍ فَسَمِعَ أَهْلُ السَّمَاءِ نُبَاحَ الْكِلابِ وَأَصْوَاتَ الدِّيَكِ ثُمَّ قَلْبَ أَسْفَلَهَا أَعْلاهَا.
١١٠٩٩ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، ثنا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَوْلُهُ: فَلَمَّا جَاءَ أَمْرُنَا جَعَلْنَا عَالِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا ذُكِرَ لَنَا أَنَّهَا ثُلُثُ قُرَى فِيهَا مِنَ الْعَدَدِ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ مِنَ الْكَثْرَةِ. ذُكِرَ لَنَا أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِيهَا أَرْبَعَةُ آلافِ أَلْفٍ وَهِيَ سَدُومٌ قَرْيَةٌ بَيْنَ الْمَدِينَةِ وَالشَّامِ.

١١١٠٠ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ الْجَرْمِيُّ، ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي عِمْرَانَ الْجَوْنِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ رَبَاحٍ، عَنْ كَعْبٍ وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهَا حِجَارَةً مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ قَالَ: هِيَ عَلَى أَهْلِ نَوَادِيهِمْ وَعَلَى دُعَاتِهِمْ وَعَلَى مُسَافِرِيهِمْ فَلَمْ يَنْفَلِتْ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدٌ.

١١١٠٢ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ، ثنا شَبَابَةُ، ثنا وَرْقَاءُ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، قَوْلُهُ: وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهَا حِجَارَةً مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ قال: بالفارسية أولها حَجَرٌ وَآخِرُهَا طِينٌ وَرُوِيَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، وَالسُّدِّيِّ وَمَطَرِ الْوَرَّاقِ نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.
١١١٠٣ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، ثنا سَهْلُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي زَايِدَةَ، عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ، عَنْ عطاء بن الساءب، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: حِجَارَةً مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ قَالَ:
لَهَا اسْمٌ بِالنَّبَطِيَّةِ وَاسْمٌ بِالْفَارِسِيَّةِ.

١١١٠٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، ثنا مِنْجَابُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، ثنا بِشْرُ بْنُ عُمَارَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي رَوْقٍ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: حِجَارَةً مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ يَقُولُ: مِنْ طِينٍ.
وَرُوِيَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، وَابْنِ سَابِطٍ مِثْلُ ذلك.
