11175 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, in what he wrote to me, that Asbagh ibn al-Faraj told us: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the saying of Allah: "And you have taken it behind your backs as a thing to be neglected." He said: "Al-Zahri [the neglected thing] is the excess, like the pack-animals that require, along with them, a back-animal [an extra beast of burden]—an excess that one does not load anything upon unless one is in need of it. So he says, 'I have your Lord with me just like this,' so if you need Him, [you use Him], but if you do not need Him, then He is nothing."
11176 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman told us, al-Husayn ibn 'Ali told us, 'Amir told us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "O my people, is my kindred more dear to you than Allah? And you have taken it behind your backs as a thing to be neglected." He said: "You have placed it behind your backs, so you did not obey Him and you did not fear Him."
His saying, the Exalted: "Indeed, my Lord is encompassing of what you do."
11177 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn 'Ali told us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim told us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding His saying: "Encompassing of what you do," he says: "He encompasses it with their deeds."
His saying, the Exalted: "And O my people, work according to your position."
11178 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Work according to your position," he said: "According to your direction/side."
His saying, the Exalted: "I am working. You will come to know."
11179 - Abu Sa'id told us, Ibn Fudayl told us, from his father, from Isma'il ibn Muslim, from al-Hasan regarding "You will come to know," he said: "A threat."
His saying, the Exalted: "To whom will come a punishment that will disgrace him."
11180 - Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tihrani told me, Hafs ibn 'Umar told us, al-Hakam ibn Aban told us, from 'Ikrimah, regarding His saying: "To whom will come a punishment that will disgrace him," he said: "Drowning."
His saying, the Exalted: "And who is a liar. So watch; indeed, I am with you a watcher."
