humbled. He said to his interpreter: "Tell him, as for paying the jizyah, I have understood that, but what is your meaning by 'while you are humbled'?"

He said: "You pay it while you are standing and I am sitting." Someone other than Abu Sa'd said: "And the whip is held over your head."

His saying, Exalted is He: "The Jews say, 'Uzayr is the son of Allah.'"

10043 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Ibn Numayr narrated to us, Yunus ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Jubayr or 'Ikrimah informed us from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Salam ibn Mishkam, Nu'man ibn Awfa, Muhammad ibn Dihyah, Shas ibn Qays, and Malik ibn Dayf came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "How can we follow you when you have abandoned our qiblah (direction of prayer) and you do not claim that 'Uzayr is the son of Allah?" So Allah, Exalted is He, revealed regarding their statement: "The Jews say, 'Uzayr is the son of Allah.'"

10044 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed us—in what he wrote to me—my father narrated to us, my paternal uncle narrated to me from his father from his grandfather from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "The Jews say, 'Uzayr is the son of Allah.'" They only said "he is the son of Allah" because 'Uzayr was among the People of the Scripture, and the Torah was with them; they practiced it as Allah willed them to practice it, then they neglected it and acted contrary to the truth, and the Ark was among them. When Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, saw that they had neglected the Torah and acted upon their own desires, Allah took away the Ark from them, made them forget the Torah, and erased it from their hearts. He sent upon them an illness, and their bowels became loose because of it, such that a man would find his liver passing out of him until they forgot the Torah and it was erased from their hearts, and 'Uzayr was among them. They remained as long as Allah willed them to remain after the Torah had been erased from their hearts. 'Uzayr was previously one of their scholars, so 'Uzayr prayed to Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, and implored Him to return to him that which had been erased from his heart. While he was praying and imploring Allah, a light from Allah descended upon him and entered his inner self, and that which had departed from his inner self of the Torah returned to him. He then called out among his people and said: "O my people, Allah has brought me the Torah and returned it to me." He began teaching them, and they remained as long as Allah willed them to remain while he was teaching them. Then the Ark descended upon them after that, after it had departed from them. When they saw the Ark, they compared what was in it to that which 'Uzayr was teaching them and found it identical. So they said: "By Allah, 'Uzayr was not given this unless he is the son of Allah."

10045 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us—in what he wrote to me—Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi regarding "The Jews say, 'Uzayr is the son of Allah," he said: They only said that because the Amalekites overcame them, killed them, and took the Torah, and their remaining scholars fled and buried the scrolls of the Torah in the mountains, and 'Uzayr used to worship at the peaks of the mountains and would not descend except on a feast day.
