Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 6 · Page 38His saying (the Almighty): 'And the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of God'

Translation · EN

The young man began to weep and say, 'O Lord, You have left the Children of Israel without a scholar.' He continued to weep for them until the outer corners of his eyes fell. He once descended to the feast, and upon his return, he found a woman standing before him at one of those graves, weeping and saying, 'O provider of food! O provider of clothing!' He said to her, 'Woe to you! Who used to feed you, clothe you, give you to drink, or benefit you before this man?' She said, 'Allah.' He said, 'But Allah is Living and does not die.' He said, 'O 'Uzayr, who used to teach the scholars before the Children of Israel?' He replied, 'Allah.' She said, 'Then why do you weep for them?' When he realized he had been answered, he turned away. She called him and said, 'O 'Uzayr, when tomorrow morning comes, there is such and such a river; bathe in it, then come out and pray two rak'ahs, for an old man will come to you, so take whatever he gives you.' When morning came, 'Uzayr went to that river and bathed, then he came out and prayed two rak'ahs. An old man came to him and said, 'Open your mouth.' He opened his mouth, and he cast into it something resembling a great glowing coal, gathered like glass, three times. 'Uzayr returned and was among the most knowledgeable of people regarding the Torah. He said, 'O Children of Israel, I have brought you the Torah.' They said, 'You were never a liar.' He stood up and tied a pen to each of his fingers, then wrote with all his fingers, and thus he wrote the Torah. When the scholars returned, they were informed of the matter of 'Uzayr, and those scholars unearthed the copies of the Torah that they had hidden in the mountains, which were in buried vessels. They compared them with 'Uzayr's Torah and found them identical, so they said, 'Allah has not given you this except that you are His son.'

His saying, Exalted is He: "The Christians say, 'The Messiah is the son of Allah.'"

10046 - Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tehrani narrated to us, Hafs ibn 'Umar al-'Adani informed us, al-Hakam ibn Aban narrated to us from 'Ikrimah, he said: The Jews said, 'Uzayr is the son of Allah,' the Christians said, 'The Messiah is the son of Allah,' the Sabaeans said, 'We worship the angels instead of Allah,' the Magians said, 'We worship the sun and the moon instead of Allah,' and the idolaters said, 'We worship idols instead of Allah.' So Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, revealed to His Prophet to refute their statement: 'Say, He is Allah, [who is] One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge...' the entire surah.

His saying, Exalted is He: "That is their statement from their mouths."

10047 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim informed us—in what he wrote to me—Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi regarding His saying: 'That is their statement from their mouths,' [meaning] they imitate the statement of those who disbelieved among the Christians.
