9227 - 'Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Abi Masarrah al-Makki narrated to us, Abu Jabir Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Malik narrated to us, Hisham ibn al-Ghazz narrated to us from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stood on the Day of Sacrifice during the Farewell Pilgrimage and said: "This is the day of the Greatest Hajj."
The second interpretation:
9228 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us from Ibn Jurayj from Muhammad ibn Qays ibn Makhramah that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said on the Day of 'Arafah while he was preaching to them: "This is the day of the Greatest Hajj."
9229 - My father narrated to us, al-Fadl ibn Dukayn narrated to us, 'Umar ibn al-Walid al-Shanni narrated to us, Shihab ibn 'Abbad narrated to us that his father narrated to us that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab stood over them at 'Arafat and said: "Whose are these tents?" They said: "They are for the 'Abd al-Qays." So he prayed for them and sought forgiveness for them, then he said: "This is the day of the Greatest Hajj."
9230 - Muhammad ibn Bishr ibn Sulayma al-Jarjara'i narrated to us, Ishaq ibn Sulayman narrated to us from Salamah ibn Bukht from 'Ikrimah from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Indeed, the Day of 'Arafah is the Day of the Greatest Hajj, the day of boasting (al-mubahaah). Allah boasts of the people of the earth to His angels in the heaven. He, Blessed and Exalted is He, says: "They have come to Me disheveled and dusty. They believed in Me without having seen Me. By My Might, I will surely forgive them." And it is the Day of the Greatest Hajj.
It was narrated from 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib in one of the narrations, 'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, and Tawus that it is the Day of 'Arafah.
9231 - Abu Sa'id ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, 'Uth 'Uthman ibn 'Umar narrated to us, Sahl al-Sarraj narrated to us, he said: Al-Hasan was asked about the Day of the Greatest Hajj, and he said: "What do you have to do with the Greatest Hajj? That was the year in which Abu Bakr—whom the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, appointed as successor—led the people in Hajj."

Regarding the one who interpreted it as the second day:
9232 - My father narrated to us, 'Imran ibn Abi Jamil narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Muhammad narrated to us from Yahya ibn Ya'la, he said: Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib said: "The Greatest Hajj is the second day, from the Day of Sacrifice. Do you not see that the Imam delivers a sermon on it?"
٩٢٢٧ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي مَسَرَّةَ الْمَكِّيُّ ثنا أَبُو جَابِرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ الْغَازِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَفَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ، فَقَالَ: هَذَا يَوْمُ الْحَجِّ الأَكْبَرِ.

٩٢٢٨ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ الْعَدَنِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةٍ وَخَطَبَهُمْ هَذَا يَوْمُ الْحَجِّ الأَكْبَرِ.
٩٢٢٩ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ دُكَيْنٍ ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الشَّنِّيُّ ثنا شِهَابُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ أَنَّ أَبَاهُ حَدَّثَنَا أَنُّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ وَقَفَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِعَرَفَاتٍ فَقَالَ: لِمَنْ هَذِهِ الأَخْبِيَةُ فَقَالُوا:
لِعَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ، فَدَعَا لَهُمْ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُمْ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: هَذَا يَوْمُ الْحَجِّ الأَكْبَرِ.
٩٢٣٠ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرِ بْنِ سَلِيمَا الْجَرْجَرَائِيُّ ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ بُخْتٍ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: إِنْ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةٍ يَوْمُ الْحَجِّ الأَكْبَرِ يَوْمُ الْمُبَاهَاةِ، يُبَاهِي اللَّهُ مَلائِكَتَهُ فِي السَّمَاءِ بِأَهْلِ الأَرْضِ يَقُولِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: جَاءُونِي شُعْثًا غُبْرًا، آمَنُوا بِي وَلَمْ يَرَوْنِي وَعِزَّتِي لأَغْفِرَنَّ لَهُمْ، وَهُوَ يَوْمُ الْحَجِّ الأَكْبَرِ.
وَرُوِيَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ وَسَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ فِي إِحْدَى الرِّوَايَاتِ وَعَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ وطاوس أَنَّهُ يَوْمُ عَرَفَةٍ.
٩٢٣١ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْقَطَّانُ ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ثنا سَهْلُ السَّرَّاجُ قَالَ: سُئِلَ الْحَسَنُ عَنْ يَوْمِ الْحَجِّ الأَكْبَرِ فَقَالَ: مَا لَكُمْ وَلِلْحَجِ الأَكْبَرِ؟ ذَاكَ عَامٌ فِيهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الَّذِي اسْتَخْلَفَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- فَحَجَّ بِالنَّاسِ.

٩٢٣٢ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ أَبِي جَمِيلٍ ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَعْلَى قَالَ: قَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ: الْحَجُّ الأَكْبَرُ الْيَوْمُ الثَّانِي مِنْ يَوْمِ النَّحْرِ، أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ الإِمَامَ يَخْطُبُ فِيهِ؟
