Translation · EN

His saying, Exalted is He: 'They have taken their ahbar (scholars)'

10055 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed us—in what he wrote to me—my father narrated to us, my uncle narrated to us from his father from his grandfather from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: 'They have taken their ahbar and their ruhban (monks),' he said: 'The ahbar are the reciters.'

10056 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Ja'far ibn 'Awn narrated to us, Salamah ibn Nubayt informed us from al-Dahhak, he said: 'The ahbar are their reciters, and the ruhban are their scholars.'

His saying, Exalted is He: 'as lords besides Allah, and the Messiah, son of Mary'

10057 - My father narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Sulayman narrated to us, 'Abd al-Salam ibn Harb narrated to us, Ghutayf ibn A'yan al-Jazari informed us from Mus'ab ibn Sa'd from 'Adi ibn Hatim, he said: 'I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while there was a cross of gold around my neck, and he was reciting: "They have taken their ahbar and their ruhban as lords besides Allah." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, they did not worship them." He said: "Indeed, but they would make lawful for them what Allah had forbidden, and they would deem it lawful; and they would forbid for them what Allah had made lawful, and they would deem it forbidden."'

10058 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj and 'Amr al-Awdi narrated to us, they said: Waki' narrated to us from al-A'mash from Habib from Abu al-Bakhtari, he said: It was said to Hudhayfah, "Did they take their ahbar and their ruhban as lords besides Allah—did they worship them?" He said: "No, but they used to make the forbidden lawful for them, and they would deem it lawful, and they would make the lawful forbidden for them, and they would deem it forbidden." It was also narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah, Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn al-Husayn, al-Dahhak, and al-Suddi, similar to that.

His saying, Exalted is He: 'And they were not commanded except to worship one God'

10059 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan narrated to us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, he said: In what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me from 'Ikrimah, or Sa'id ibn Jubayr from Ibn 'Abbas: 'Worship your Lord,' meaning: 'Proclaim the Oneness (tawhid) of your Lord.'

His saying, Exalted is He: 'There is no god except Him'

10060 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah informed us from Abu Rawq from al-Dahhak from Ibn 'Abbas regarding 'There is no god except Him,' he said: 'It is a [declaration of] Oneness (tawhid).'

10061 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said regarding 'There is no god except Him,' meaning: 'There is no partner with Him in His command.'
