His saying, Exalted is He: 'Exalted is He above what they associate [with Him]'
[The first interpretation]
10062 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Hafs ibn Ghiyath narrated to us from Hajjaj from Ibn Abi Mulaykah from Ibn 'Abbas regarding 'Subhan Allah' (Exalted is Allah): 'It is Allah's sanctification of His Own Self from evil.' He said: 'Then 'Umar said to 'Ali, while his companions were with him: "We have known 'There is no god but Allah,' so what is 'Subhan Allah'?" 'Ali said to him: "It is a word that He loved for Himself and was pleased with, so He loved for it to be said."
And the second interpretation:
10063 - Abu Sa'id ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us, Abu al-Ashhab narrated to us from al-Hasan, he said: 'Subhan Allah: it is a Name which people cannot claim for themselves.'
The third interpretation:
10064 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Nufayl narrated to us, al-Nadr ibn 'Arabi narrated to us, he said: A man asked Maymun ibn Mihran about 'Subhan Allah,' and he said: 'It is a name by which Allah is glorified, and by which one seeks refuge from evil.'
His saying, Exalted is He: 'They wish to extinguish the light of Allah'
10065 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim informed us—in what he wrote to me—Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi regarding His saying: 'They wish to extinguish the light of Allah,' he said: 'They wish to extinguish Islam.'
10066 - Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Aslam mentioned to us, Ishaq ibn Rahawayh narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Wasiti informed us from Juwaybir from al-Dahhak regarding His saying: 'They wish to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths,' he says: 'They wish for Muhammad and his companions to perish, so that they do not worship Allah with Islam on the earth.'
His saying, Exalted is He: 'with their mouths'
10067 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman informed us—in what he wrote to me—Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi regarding His saying: 'with their mouths,' he says: 'with their speech.'
His saying, Exalted is He: 'But Allah refuses except to complete His light, although the disbelievers dislike it'
