10030 - Bishr ibn Muslim ibn 'Abd al-Hamid al-Himsiyy narrated to us in Hims, al-Rabi' ibn Rawh narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Wahbiyy narrated to us, Ziyad—that is al-Jassas—narrated to us, from Abu 'Uthman, who said: I said: O Abu Hurayrah, I heard my brothers in Basra claim that you say: I heard the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) say: "Indeed, Allah rewards a single good deed with a million good deeds." Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Rather, I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) say: "Indeed, Allah rewards a single good deed with two million good deeds." Then he recited this verse: "But what is the enjoyment of worldly life in the Hereafter except a little?" So the world, what has passed of it compared to what remains of it, is little in the sight of Allah.
10031 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Hammad narrated to us, Mihran narrated to us, from Sufyan, from al-A'mash, regarding: "But what is the enjoyment of worldly life in the Hereafter except a little?" He said: Like the provisions of a shepherd.
10032 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Hashid ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd al-Wahid al-Bukhari (who is reliable) narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn al-Ash'ath narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Abi Hazim narrated to us, from his father, who said: When death approached 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Marwan, he said: "Bring me my shroud in which I will be shrouded, that I may look at it." When it was placed before him, he looked at it and said: "Is this all that I shall have of it? Is this all I leave behind from the world?" Then he turned his back, wept, and said: "Ugh to you, O dwelling! If your much is but little, and if your little is but short, then we were surely in deception regarding you (1)."
His saying, Exalted is He: "If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment."
[The First Perspective]
10033 - Abu Sa'id 'Abd Allah ibn Sa'id al-Kindi al-Ashajj narrated to us, Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Mu'min ibn Khalid al-Hanafiyy, Najdah ibn Nufay' narrated to us, who said: I asked Ibn 'Abbas about this verse: "If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment." Ibn 'Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) called a tribe of the Arabs to go forth, but they were heavy/reluctant toward him, so Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: "If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment," and Allah withheld the rain from them. He said: So that was their punishment.
And the Second Perspective:
10034 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani narrated to us, Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah narrated to us, from Sulayman al-Ahwal, from 'Ikrimah, who said: When [the verse] "If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment" was revealed, and some people had stayed behind in the desert to teach their people, the hypocrites said: "Some people from among the Companions of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) have remained in the desert," and they said: "The people of the desert are ruined." Then it was revealed: "And it is not for the believers to go forth in their entirety."
