his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "Go forth, whether light or heavy," he says: Go forth [whether] active or inactive.
It was narrated from Qatadah: similar to this.
And the Third Interpretation:
10059 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, Ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Mansur, from al-Hakam, regarding "Go forth, whether light or heavy," he said: [Whether] busy or not busy.
The Fourth Interpretation:
10060 - My father narrated to us, Nasr ibn 'Ali narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Mansur ibn Zadhan, from al-Hasan regarding "Go forth, whether light or heavy," he said: In hardship and in ease.
The Fifth Interpretation:
10061 - My father narrated to us, Abu Hudhayfah narrated to us, Shibl narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid(1): "Go forth, whether light or heavy," they said: We have among us the burdened, the one with needs, with dependents, with business, and the one whose affairs are widely dispersed in that regard. So Allah, the Exalted, revealed [this], and He refused to excuse them without them going forth, light or heavy, and despite their condition.
Those who interpreted the verse as being abrogated:
10062 - al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabah narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj and 'Uthman ibn 'Ata' al-Khurasani informed us, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "Go forth, whether light or heavy," [he said] then He abrogated this verse, [and] "And it is not for the believers to go forth all at once," up to his saying: "that they might be warned," he says: That a group should go forth and a group should remain with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). So those remaining with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) are those who gain understanding in the religion. It was narrated from 'Ata' al-Khurasani and Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi: similar to this.
Another interpretation regarding the abrogated [verses]:
10063 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn 'Ali narrated to us, 'Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying, the Exalted: "Go forth, whether light or heavy," he says: Rich and poor, strong and weak. A man came to him on that day—they claim it was al-Miqdad—and he was a great, elderly man, so he complained to him and asked him to give him permission, but he refused. Then there was revealed on that day: "Go forth, whether light or heavy." When this verse was revealed, its matter was difficult for the people, so Allah abrogated it and said: "There is no blame upon the weak or the sick or upon those who do not find anything to spend, when they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger."
