‘Awf, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mas’ud al-Fazari, from Abu al-Darda’ who said: Doubt is hesitation and Kufr (denial).
10084 - ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali narrated to us, ‘Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding his saying: "and their hearts have doubted"—he says: Their hearts were in doubt.
His saying, the Exalted: "And if they had intended to go forth, they would have prepared for it some preparation."
10085 - And by the same chain from al-Suddi regarding his saying: "And if they had intended to go forth, they would have prepared for it some preparation"—as for the 'preparation' (’udda), it is strength/equipment.
His saying, the Exalted: "But Allah disliked their being sent forth."
10086 - Ibn Abi Aslam mentioned it, Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Hanzali narrated to us, ‘Amr ibn Muhammad al-‘Anqazi informed us, Juwaybir narrated to us, from al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "And if they had intended to go forth, they would have prepared for it some preparation. But Allah disliked their being sent forth"—he says: their going forth.
His saying, the Exalted: "So He kept them back."
10087 - Abu Zur’ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr ibn ‘Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "So He kept them back"—he said: He restrained them. It was narrated from al-Dahhak and al-Suddi something similar.
His saying, the Exalted: "And it was said, 'Sit [at home] with those who sit.'"—the verse.

His saying, the Exalted: "If they had gone forth with you, they would not have increased you except in confusion."
10088 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, in what he wrote to me, Asbagh informed me, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding the saying of Allah: "If they had gone forth with you, they would not have increased you except in confusion"—he said: These were the hypocrites at the Battle of Tabuk. Allah asked His Prophet (peace be upon him) and the believers about them, saying: "What saddens you? If they had gone forth with you, they would not have increased you except in confusion." He says: He gathered [evil] for you, and did such and such, and they would have abandoned you."
