Volume 6 · Page 69[Surah al-Tawbah (9): Verse 54]

Translation · EN

He said: This is regarding Zakat; Allah ordered that it be taken from his community, whether they are willing or unwilling, so it was taken from them. The hypocrites said: "Spend, willingly or unwillingly, it will never be accepted from you; indeed, you were a people defiantly disobedient."

His saying, the Exalted: "And what prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them."

10323 - Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Aslam mentioned it to us, Ishaq ibn Ibrahim ibn Rahawayh narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Wasiti reported to us, Juwaybir reported to us, from al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "And what prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them," meaning: their alms (sadaqat), "except that they have disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger."

His saying, the Exalted: "And they do not come to the prayer except while they are lazy."

10324 - My father narrated to us, Muslim narrated to us, Shu‘bah narrated to us, from Mis‘ad, from Simak al-Hanafi, from Ibn ‘Abbas: that he disliked for a man to say: "I am lazy." Mu’ammal ibn Isma‘il added in this chain from Ibn ‘Abbas: And he interprets this verse: "And they do not come to the prayer except while they are lazy," and in what Mu’ammal ibn Isma‘il narrated from Shu‘bah with this chain from Ibn ‘Abbas.

His saying: "So let not their wealth or their children impress you."

10325 - Ibn Abi Aslam mentioned it, Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Yazid narrated to us, Juwaybir narrated to us, from al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "So let not their wealth or their children impress you," he says: Do not let their wealth or their children deceive you.

His saying, the Exalted: "Allah only intends to punish them through them in the worldly life."

10326 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid al-Narsi reported to us, Yazid ibn Zuray‘ narrated to us, from Sa‘id, from Qatadah: "So let not their wealth or their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them through them in the worldly life." He said: This is among the advanced speech (prolepsis); he says: Do not let their wealth or their children impress you in the worldly life; Allah only intends to punish them through them in the Hereafter.

10327 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj reported to us, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam reciting the saying of Allah—Mighty and Majestic is He—: "So let not their wealth or their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them through them in the worldly life," by the calamities [that befall] them; it is a punishment for them, and it is a reward for the believers.
