10346 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi reported to us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj informed us, saying: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding the saying of Allah: "And among them are those who criticize you concerning the charities; if they are given from it, they are pleased; but if they are not given from it, they become angry." He said: These are the hypocrites. They said: By Allah, Muhammad does not give it except to those he loves, and he does not favor anyone with it except his own inclination. So Allah, the Exalted, informed His Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—that their news only came from Allah, and this is a matter from Allah, not from Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. "Charities are only for the poor..." to the end of the verse.
[His saying, the Exalted: "Charities are only for the poor"]
10347 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Hisinjani narrated to us, ‘Ubayd ibn Ya‘ish narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Salt narrated to us, from Qays, from al-A‘mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, who said: A Bedouin came to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—while he was distributing [charity], and he asked him. He turned away from him and continued distributing. Some of the shepherds said: By Allah, you have not been just. He said: Woe to you, who will be just if I am not just? So Allah, the Exalted, revealed: "Charities are only for the poor and the needy..." until the end of the verse.
10348 - My father narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi‘ narrated to us, Abu Ishaq al-Fazari narrated to us, from ‘Ata’ ibn al-Sa’ib, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding "Charities are only for the poor and the needy," he said: This is merely something He has made known to them; so whichever category you give from it, it suffices you.
It was narrated from ‘Umar with a mursal chain, and from Hudhayfah, Abu al-‘Aliyah, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, Tawus, ‘Ata’, al-Hasan, Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i, al-Dahhak, Maymun ibn Mihran, Muqatil ibn Hayyan, and al-Zuhri that they said: If you place it in one category, it suffices you.
[His saying, the Exalted: "For the poor."]
[The First Aspect]
10350 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Mihran narrated to us, Abu Mu‘awiyah narrated to us, ‘Umar ibn Nafi‘ narrated to us, from Abu Bakr al-‘Absi, who said: One day, ‘Umar was inspecting the charity camels while wearing a cloak. When he finished, he left and passed by a man from the People of the Book who was lying at a door. He said: They have exhausted me and taken the jizyah from me until my eyesight has failed, and there is no one who returns to me with anything. ‘Umar said: Then we have not been just. Then he said: This is one of those of whom Allah said: "Charities are only for the poor and the needy." The poor are the disabled among the People of the Book. Then he ordered a provision for him to be provided.
