The Second Aspect:

10363 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Thawr informed us, from Ma‘mar, from Abu Ayyub, from Ibn Sirin: That ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab said: "The needy (masakin) are not those who have no wealth," rather, the needy are those who strive to earn but cannot.

The Third Aspect:

10364 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding His saying: "Charities are only for the poor and the needy," he said: The needy are those who roam about [begging].

10365 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, Abu al-Zubayri narrated to us, Ma‘qil ibn ‘Ubayd Allah narrated to us, who said: I asked al-Zuhri about the saying of Allah: "and the needy." He said: Those who ask [for alms]. It was also narrated from Muqatil ibn Hayyan: Something similar to that.

The Fourth Aspect:

10366 - It was read to Yunus ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la, Ibn Wahb informed us, Jarir ibn Hazim reported to me, from ‘Ali ibn al-Hakam, from al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim, who said: Ibn ‘Abbas used to say: The needy are from the Ahl al-Dhimma (protected non-Muslim subjects).

Al-Dahhak said: The needy are from the Bedouins.

10367 - My father narrated to us, he said: I found in my book, from Sulayman ibn Harb, Jarir ibn Hazim narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn al-Hakam, from al-Dahhak, regarding his saying: "and the needy," he said: Those who did not emigrate.

The Fifth Aspect:

10368 - My father narrated to us, Mu‘alla ibn Asad narrated to us, Abu ‘Awanah narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding the saying of Allah: "Charities are only for the poor and the needy," he said: The needy is the one who does not suffer from a chronic illness, yet is in need.

The Sixth Aspect:

10369 - Muhammad ibn ‘Ammar narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Dashtaki narrated to us, Abu Ja‘far al-Razi narrated to us, from Qatadah, who said: The needy are those who suffer from a chronic illness.
