His saying, the Almighty: "And among them are those who abuse the Prophet."
10399 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas, the mawla of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad, from ‘Ikrimah or Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, he said: Nabtal ibn al-Harith used to come to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and sit with him, listening to him, then he would report his speech to the hypocrites. So Allah revealed concerning him: "And among them are those who abuse the Prophet and say, 'He is an ear.'"
10300 - (*) ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman ibn al-Ash‘ath narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali narrated to us, ‘Amir ibn al-Furat informed us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "And among them are those who abuse the Prophet and say, 'He is an ear.' Say, 'An ear of goodness for you, who believes in Allah and believes the believers and [is] a mercy to those who believe among you,'" he said: A group of hypocrites gathered, among them: Jilas ibn Suwayd ibn Samit, Makhshi ibn Humayr, and Wadi‘ah ibn Thabit. They wanted to speak ill of the Prophet (peace be upon him), but they forbade one another, saying: "We fear that this will reach Muhammad and he will deal with you [severely]." Some of them said: "Muhammad is merely an ear; we will swear to him and he will believe us." They had with them a youth from the Ansar named ‘Amir ibn Qays, so they belittled him. They spoke, saying: "If what Muhammad says is true, we are worse than donkeys." The youth heard this and became angry, saying: "By Allah, Muhammad is indeed truthful, and you are indeed worse than donkeys!" Then he went and reported it to the Prophet (peace be upon him). He summoned them, and they swore by Allah that ‘Amir was a liar, while ‘Amir swore that they were the liars. The Prophet (peace be upon him) believed them. ‘Amir then said: "O Allah, do not separate us until the truthfulness of the truthful one is distinguished from the falsehood of the liar." Makhshi ibn Humayr had said in that gathering: "Woe to you, O assembly of hypocrites! By Allah, I see that we are the worst of Allah’s creation and beings. By Allah, I wish I were brought forward and flogged one hundred lashes, so that nothing would be revealed about us that exposes us." At that, they said: "By Allah, if Muhammad is truthful"—and they said: "He is an ear." [Allah said]: "Say, 'An ear of goodness for you.'"
His saying, the Almighty: "And say, 'He is an ear.'"
10301 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Bishr ibn ‘Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding His saying: "And say, 'He is an ear,'" he said: They say: Meaning, he hears what is said to him.

قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَمِنْهُمُ الَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ النَّبِيَّ.
١٠٣٩٩ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو زُنَيْجٌ ثنا سَلَمَةُ ثنا مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ أَوْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: كَانَ نَبْتَلُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ يَأْتِي رَسُولَ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسلم- فيجلس إليه فيسمع مِنْهُ، ثُمَّ يَنْقُلُ حَدِيثَهُ إِلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ وَمِنْهُمُ الَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ النَّبِيَّ وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنٌ.
١٠٣٠٠ - (*) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الأَشْعَثَ ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ أَنْبَأَ عَامِرُ ابْنُ الْفُرَاتِ عَنْ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ قَوْلُهُ: وَمِنْهُمُ الَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ النَّبِيَّ وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنُ قُلْ أُذُنُ خَيْرٍ لَكُمْ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَيُؤْمَنُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ، قَالَ: اجْتَمَعَ نَاسٌ مِنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِيهِمْ: جِلاسُ بْنُ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ صَامِتٍ وَمَخْشِيُّ بْنُ حِمْيَرٍ وَوَدِيعَةُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ فَأَرَادُوا أَنْ يَقَعُوا فِي النَّبِيِّ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- فَنَهَى بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا وَقَالُوا: إِنَّا نَخَافُ أَنْ يَبْلُغَ مُحَمَّدًا فَيَقَعُ بِكُمْ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: إِنَّمَا مُحَمَّدٌ أُذُنٌ نَحْلِفُ لَهُ فَيُصَدِّقُنَا، وَعِنْدَهُمْ غُلامٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ يُدْعَى عَامِرُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فَحَقَّرُوهُ فَتَكَلَّمُوا وَقَالُوا: «لَئِنْ كَانَ مَا يَقُولُ مُحَمَّدٌ حَقًّا لَنَحْنُ شَرٌّ مِنْ الْحَمِيرِ» ، فَسَمِعَهَا الْغُلامُ فَغَضِبَ وَقَالَ: وَاللَّهِ إِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا لَصَادِقٌ، وَإِنَّكُمْ لَشَرٌ مِنَ الْحَمِيرِ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ فَبَلَّغْهَا النَّبِيَّ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- فَدَعَاهُمْ، فَحَلَفُوا بِاللَّهِ إِنَّ عَامِرًا لَكَاذِبٌ، وَحَلَفَ عَامِرُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَذِبَةٌ فَصَدَّقَهُمُ النَّبِيَّ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- فَقَالَ عَامِرٌ: اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُفَرِّقَ بَيْنَنَا حَتَّى تَبَيَّنَ صِدْقُ الصَّادِقَ مِنْ كَذَبِ الْكَاذِبِ، وَقَدْ كَانَ مَخْشِيُّ بْنُ حِمْيَرٍ قَالَ فِي ذَلِكَ الْمَجْلِسِ:
وَيْحَكُمْ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ، وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لأَرَى أَنَّا شَرَّ خَلْقِ اللَّهِ وَخَلِيقَتِهِ، وَاللَّهِ لَوَدِدْتُ أَنِّي قُدِّمْتُ فَجُلِدْتُ مِائَةَ جَلْدَةٍ، وَأَنَّهُ لَا يَنْزِلُ فِينَا شَيْءٌ يَفْضَحُنَا فَعِنْدَ ذَلِكَ قَالُوا: وَاللَّهِ إِنْ كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ صَادِقًا وَقَالُوا: هُوَ أُذُنٌ. قُلْ أُذُنُ خَيْرٍ لَكُمْ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنٌ.
١٠٣٠١ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ ثنا مِنْجَابُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ أَنْبَأَ بِشْرُ بْنُ عُمَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي رَوْقٍ عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: ويقولون هو أذن قَالَ: يَقُولُونَ: أَيْ يَسْمَعُ مَا يُقَالُ لَهُ.
