And I saw him clinging to the saddle-strap of the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), the stones striking him, while he was saying: 'O Messenger of Allah, we were only conversing and playing,' and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was saying: 'Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?'
10048 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: 'And if you question them, they will surely say: We were only conversing and playing.' He said: A man from the hypocrites said: 'Muhammad tells us that the she-camel of so-and-so is in such-and-such valley on such-and-such day, and what does he know? What is the unseen?'
10049 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, from Sa'id, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: 'And if you question them, they will surely say: We were only conversing and playing. Say: Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?' He said: While the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was on his expedition to Tabuk, and there were people from the hypocrites in front of him, they said: 'Does this man hope to conquer the palaces and fortresses of Syria?! Far from it, far from it!' So Allah disclosed that to His Prophet, and the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: 'Detain the riders.' He came to them and said: 'You said such-and-such, you said such-and-such.' They said: 'O Prophet of Allah, we were only conversing and playing.' So Allah revealed regarding them what you hear.
10400 - 'Amr ibn Thawr al-Qaysari informed us in what he wrote to me, al-Firyabi narrated to us, Qays ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, from Salim al-Aftas, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was on a journey, and some people from the hypocrites were traveling ahead of him, and they said: 'If what this one says—I think he meant Muhammad—is true, we are worse than donkeys,' meaning the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). So Allah informed His Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) of what they said, so He said: 'And if you question them, they will surely say: We were only conversing and playing.' The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sent for them and said: 'What were you saying?' They said: 'We did not say anything; we were only conversing and playing.' Say: 'Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?'

10401 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Maymun al-Khayyat narrated to us, Isma'il ibn Dawud al-Mikhraqi narrated to us, Malik ibn Anas narrated to us, from Nafi', from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar, who said: I saw 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy, in front of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and the stones were striking him, and he was saying: 'O Muhammad, we were only conversing and playing,' and the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was saying: 'Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?'
فَأَنَا رَأَيْتُهُ مُتَعَلِّقًا بِحَقَبِ نَاقَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- تَنْكُبُهُ الْحِجَارَةُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ: إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- يَقُولُ أبالله وآياته ورسوله كنتم تستهزؤن.
١٠٠٤٨ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ ثنا شَبَابَةُ ثنا وَرْقَاءُ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، قَوْلُهُ: وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ قَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ: يُحَدِّثُنَا مُحَمَّدٌ أَنَّ نَاقَةَ فُلانٍ بِوَادِي كَذَا وَكَذَا فِي يَوْمِ كَذَا وَكَذَا وَمَا يُدْرِيهِ مَا الْغَيْبُ؟
١٠٠٤٩ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى أَنْبَأَ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيِّ ثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَوْلُهُ: وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ قُلْ أَبِاللَّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنْتُمْ تستهزؤن قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- فِي غَزْوَتِهِ إِلَى تَبُوكَ وَبَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ أُنَاسٌ مِنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ، فَقَالُوا: أَيَرْجُو هَذَا الرَّجُلُ أن يفتح قُصُورَ الشَّامِ وَحُصُونَهَا؟! هَيْهَاتَ هَيْهَاتَ!، فَأَطْلَعَ اللَّهُ نَبِيَّهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ-: احْتَبِسُوا عَلَى الرَّكْبِ فَأَتَاهُمْ فَقَالَ: قُلْتُمْ كَذَا، قُلْتُمْ كَذَا، قَالُوا:
يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ، إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِمْ مَا تَسْمَعُونَ.
١٠٤٠٠ - أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ ثَوْرٍ الْقَيْسَارِيُّ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ ثنا الْفِرْيَابِيُّ ثنا قَيْسُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ عَنْ سَالِمٍ الأَفْطَسُ عَنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- فِي مَسِيرٍ، وَأُنَاسٌ مِنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ يَسِيرُونَ أَمَامَهُ فَقَالُوا: إِنْ كَانَ مَا يَقُولُ هَذَا أُرَاهُ قَالَ: مُحَمَّدٌ حَقًّا، نَحْنُ شَرٌّ مِنَ الْحَمِيرِ، يَعْنُونَ النَّبِيَّ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- فَأَعْلَمَ اللَّهُ نَبِيَّهُ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- الَّذِي قَالُوا: فَقَالَ: وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِمُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فقال: ما كنتم تَقُولُونَ؟
قَالُوا مَا قُلْنَا شَيْئًا إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ قُلْ أَبِاللَّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنْتُمْ تستهزؤن.
