His saying, the Almighty: "Do not make excuses; you have disbelieved after your belief."
10402 - (*) My father narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Idris narrated to us, he said: Ibn Ishaq said: al-Zuhri narrated to me, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Ka'b ibn Malik, from his father, from his grandfather, Ka'b, who said: Makhshi ibn Humayr said: "I would have loved to be compensated that every man of you be struck one hundred lashes, provided that we be saved from having a Quran revealed concerning us." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to 'Ammar ibn Yasir: "Go catch up with the people, for they have burnt (with regret); ask them about what they said. If they deny and conceal it, say: 'Nay, you certainly said such-and-such.'" So he caught up with them and said to them what the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had commanded. They came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) offering excuses, and Makhshi ibn Humayr said: "O Messenger of Allah, my name and my father's name have hindered me." So Allah the Almighty revealed regarding them: "Do not make excuses; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon a faction of you, We will punish a faction" (at-Tawbah: 66). So the one whom Allah pardoned was Makhshi ibn Humayr; he renamed himself 'Abd al-Rahman and asked Allah to be killed as a martyr, where he would not know the place of his killing. He was killed on the Day of al-Yamamah, neither knowing his place of killing nor who killed him, and neither a trace nor a sign of him could be seen (1).
His saying, the Almighty: "If We pardon a faction of you, We will punish a faction because they were criminals"—the verse.
10403 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "If We pardon a faction of you, We will punish a faction," he said: "The faction (ta'ifah) is the man and the group."
His saying, the Almighty: "The hypocrite men and the hypocrite women."
10404 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his saying: "With the munkar (evil): It is denial, and it is the most evil of evil."
10405 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dashtaki narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah, who said: "Every verse in the Quran where Allah mentions the munkar, it refers to the worship of idols and Satan."
