10208 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, he said: When Allah destroyed 'Ad and its affair was finished, Thamud thrived after them. They were made successors on the earth, so they increased in number and spread out, then they became arrogant towards Allah. When their corruption became manifest and they worshipped other than Allah, Allah sent Salih to them—they were an Arab people, and he was the most moderate of them in lineage and the best of them in status as a messenger. Their dwellings were from al-Hijr to Qarh, which is Wadi al-Qura, and between that is eighteen miles, between the Hijaz and the Levant (al-Sham). So Allah sent him to them as a young man, and he called them to Allah until he turned grey and aged, yet none followed him from among them except a few who were oppressed.
His saying, the Almighty: "And the people of Abraham."
10209 - Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tahrani informed us, in what he wrote to me, Isma'il ibn 'Abd al-Karim reported, 'Abd al-Samad ibn Ma'qil narrated to us, he said: I heard Wahb—meaning Ibn Munabbih—mentioning the journey of Abraham, the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), when his people cast him out after they had thrown him into the fire. He set out with his wife Sarah, and with him was his brother Lot. They headed towards the land of the Levant (al-Sham), then they reached Egypt.
His saying, the Almighty: "And the companions of Madyan."
10200 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim informed us, in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, he said: Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) sent Shu'ayb to Madyan and to the companions of the al-Aykah (the Thicket): which is a grove of trees. They, along with their disbelief, used to give short measure and weight. So he called them, but they belied him. He said to them what Allah mentioned in the Qur'an, and they responded to him. When they grew arrogant and lied, they asked him for the punishment.
His saying, the Almighty: "And the overturned ones (al-Mu'tafikat)."
10201 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And the overturned ones," he said: The people of Lot; their land was overturned with them, so He made its highest part its lowest.
10202 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated to us, Sulayman ibn Kathir—meaning his brother—reported, Husayn narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: When the messengers of Allah entered upon the people of Lot, he thought they were guests. He said: So he brought out his daughters to the road and placed his guests between himself and his daughters. He said: And his people came to him, rushing towards him. So he said: "These are my daughters; they are purer for you, so fear Allah and do not disgrace me regarding my guest."
