The Second Aspect:
9267 - My father narrated to us, al-Musayyab ibn Wadih narrated to us, Abu Ishaq al-Fazari narrated to us from Sufyan from al-Suddi regarding "Then kill the polytheists wherever you find them," that it was abrogated by "Then either [confer] favor afterwards or ransom [them]."
His saying, Exalted is He: "And seize them, and besiege them"
9268 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Shaqiq narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us from Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding His saying: "And seize them, and besiege them, and sit in wait for them at every place of observation," Allah commanded him to unsheathe the sword against them, to kill them, and to sit in wait for them at every place of observation, so that he might seize them and besiege them.
9269 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed me—in what he wrote to me—Asbagh narrated to us, he said: I heard Ibn Zayd saying regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He: "And besiege them," he said: Constrict them.
His saying, Exalted is He: "And sit in wait for them at every place of observation"
9270 - And through the same chain, he said: I heard Ibn Zayd regarding His saying: "And sit in wait for them at every place of observation," do not let them travel through the lands, nor let them leave for trade.
9271 - My father narrated to us, a man whom he named narrated to us from Abu 'Imran al-Hawni that he said: The ribat (garrison duty/stationing) in the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, is His saying: "And sit in wait for them at every place of observation."
His saying, Exalted is He: "But if they should repent"
9272 - My father narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah ibn Musa narrated to us, Abu Ja'far al-Razi informed us from al-Rabi' from Anas ibn Malik: "But if they should repent and establish prayer," he says: Their repentance is the discarding of the idols and their worship.
9273 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us from Muqatil ibn Hayyan regarding His saying: "But if they should repent" from polytheism, "and establish prayer and give zakah," you shall not kill them, and you shall refrain from them.
And it was narrated from al-Dahhak: "But if they should repent" from polytheism.
9274 - My father narrated to us, al-Musayyab ibn Wadih narrated to us, Abu Ishaq narrated to us from al-Awza'i regarding His saying: "But if they should repent," he said: The testimony that there is no god but Allah.
