Volume 7 · Page 101His saying, Exalted is He: 'Were it not that you think me senile.'

Translation · EN

al-Furat, from Asbat, from al-Suddi: "So when the caravan had departed from Egypt, heading toward al-Sham, Ya‘qub perceived the scent of Yusuf." This is His saying: "Their father said to his sons, 'I truly smell the scent of Yusuf.'"

His saying, the Almighty: "If you do not think me senile."

[The first interpretation]

11966 - Ahmad ibn ‘Isam al-Ansari narrated to us, Mu’ammal narrated to us, Isra'il narrated to us, Abu Sinan narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Hudhayl, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "If you do not think me senile (tufannidun)," he said: "If you do not accuse me of foolishness." It was also narrated from ‘Ata' similarly.

The second interpretation:

11967 - My father narrated to us, ‘Abd Allah ibn Raja’ narrated to us, Isra'il reported to us, from Muslim, from Mujahid, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "If you do not think me senile," he said: "If you do not call me a liar."

The third interpretation:

11968 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated to us, Isra'il narrated to us, from Abu Yahya, from Mujahid who said: "If you do not think me aged."

11969 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh reported to us, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the word of Allah: "If you do not think me senile," he said: "The one who has no intellect is the one who is 'mufannad' (senile)." They say: "He is not rational." He said: And the poet said:

Be patient, for among those with intellects is one who is considered senile.

His saying, the Almighty: "They said, 'By Allah, you are still in your old error.'"

11970 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu‘awiya ibn Salih narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talha, from Ibn ‘Abbas: "You are still in your old error (dalalika al-qadim)," he says: "In your old mistake."

The second interpretation:

11971 - Abu Zur‘a narrated to us, Yahya ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Lahi‘a narrated to me, ‘Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr regarding the word of Allah: "You are still in your old error," he says: "In your old madness."

11972 - My father narrated to us, Nasr ibn ‘Ali narrated to us, my father informed me, from Qurra, from al-Hasan, regarding the word of Allah: "By Allah, you are still in your old error," he said: "Disobedience (‘uquq)."

الْفُرَاتِ، عَنْ أَسْبَاطٍ، عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ: فَلَمَّا فَصَلَتِ الْعِيرُ مِنْ مِصْرَ مُنْطَلِقَةً إِلَى الشَّامِ وَجَدَ يَعْقُوبُ رِيحَ يُوسُفَ وَهُوَ قَوْلُهُ: قَالَ أَبُوهُمْ لِبَنِي بَنِيهِ إِنِّي لأَجِدُ رِيحَ يُوسُفَ

قَوْلُهُ تعالى: لولا أن تفندون.

١١٩٦٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عِصَامٍ الأَنْصَارِيُّ، ثنا مُؤَمَّلٌ، ثنا إِسْرَائِيلُ، ثنا أَبُو سِنَانٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي الْهُذَيْلِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: لَوْلا أَنْ تُفَنِّدُونِ قَالَ: أَنْ تُسَفِّهُونِ وَرُوِيَ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ.

١١٩٦٧ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ، أنا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَوْلُهُ: لَوْلا أَنْ تُفَنِّدُونِ قَالَ: لَوْلا أَنْ تُكَذِّبُونِ.

وَالْوَجْهُ الثَّالِثُ:

١١٩٦٨ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ ثنا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ، ثنا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنِ أَبِي يَحْيَى، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ: لَوْلا أَنْ تَهْرَمُونِ.

١١٩٦٩ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ، أنا أَصْبَغُ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ: لَوْلا أَنْ تُفَنِّدُونِ قَالَ: الَّذِي لَيْسَ لَهُ عَقْلٌ ذَلِكَ الْمُفَنَّدُ، يَقُولُونَ لَا يَعْقِلُ، قَالَ: وَقَالَ الشَّاعِرُ:

مَهْلا فَإِنَّ مِنَ الْعُقُولِ مُفَنَّدًا

قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: قَالُوا تَالَلَّهِ إنك لفي ضلالك القديم.

١١٩٧١ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ لَفِي ضَلالِكَ الْقَدِيمِ يَقُولُ: فِي جُنُونِكَ الْقَدِيمِ.

١١٩٧٢ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ قُرَّةَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَالَلَّهِ إِنَّكَ لَفِي ضَلالِكَ الْقَدِيمِ. قَالَ: عُقُوقًا.
