His saying, the Exalted: "Until, when the messengers despaired."
12057 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Husayn, from ‘Imran al-Sulaymi, from Ibn ‘Abbas: "Until, when the messengers despaired of their people believing them."
His saying, the Exalted: "And thought that they had been denied."
12058 - And through the same chain to Ibn ‘Abbas: "And thought that they had been denied," he said: And their people thought that the messengers had lied to them; Our victory came to them.
12059 - Ahmad ibn ‘Isam narrated to us, Mu’ammal narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Ata’ ibn al-Sa’ib, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: "Until, when the messengers despaired of their people submitting, and their people thought that the messengers had been denied, Our victory came to them."
12060 - Yunus ibn ‘Abd al-A’la narrated to us, Ibn Wahb reported to us, Ibn Lahi‘a informed me, from ‘Aqil ibn Khalid, from Ibn Shihab, ‘Urwa ibn al-Zubayr informed me that he asked ‘A’isha, the wife of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and may Allah be pleased with her, she said: Do you see the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Until, when the messengers despaired and thought that they had been denied" (wa zannu annahum qad kudhibu)—is it "kudhibu" (denied/lied to) or "kadhabu" (lied) with the lightening of the letter? She said: Rather, it is "kudhibu," meaning with the shaddah (emphasis). I said: By Allah, they were certain that their people had denied them, and it was not a thought. She said: Yes, by my life, they were certain of that. I said: Then perhaps it is "and thought that they had been denied" (wa zannu annahum qad kudhibu). She said: Allah forbid! The messengers would not think that of their Lord. I said: Then what is this verse? She said: They are the followers of the messengers who believed in them and attested to them, and the affliction lasted long for them, and victory was delayed from them, until when the messengers despaired of their people denying them, and the messengers thought that their followers [had despaired] when they denied them, Allah’s victory came to them at that moment.
12061 - Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani narrated to us, Hafs ibn ‘Umar narrated to us, al-Hakam ibn Aban narrated to us, from ‘Ikrama, he said: I heard Ibn ‘Abbas saying regarding His saying: "Until, when the messengers despaired and thought that they had been denied." ‘Ikrama said: I said to Ibn ‘Abbas: "Is it a lie?" He said: "Yes, may your mother be bereaved! Did Nuh not say: 'My Lord, indeed my son is of my family; and indeed, Your promise is the truth; and You are the most just of judges!' [Allah] said: 'O Nuh, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is one whose work was other than righteous.'"
