Volume 7 · Page 119His saying: Without pillars

Translation · EN

‘Ali ibn Salih, from Salamah ibn Wahram, from ‘Ikrimah, from Ibn ‘Abbas: The heaven is upon four angels; each corner is entrusted to an angel.

12088 - ‘Ali narrated to us, Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, ‘Ata’ ibn al-Sa'ib narrated to us, from al-Sha‘bi, who said: Ibn ‘Abbas wrote to Abu al-Jild, asking him about the heaven, from what thing it is. He wrote back to him: The heaven is from a restrained wave.

His saying: "Without pillars."

[The first interpretation]

12089 - My father narrated to us, al-Hakam ibn Musa narrated to us, Mu‘adh ibn Mu‘adh narrated to us, from ‘Imran ibn Hudayr, from ‘Ikrimah, who said: I said to Ibn ‘Abbas: Someone says that it is upon pillars—meaning the heaven. Ibn ‘Abbas said: He recites it as "without pillars (bi-ghayri ‘amadin) you see." [i.e., that they are visible].

12090 - Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Awshajah narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn Musa al-Ashyab narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Humayd, from al-Husayn ibn Muslim, from Mujahid, regarding the saying of Allah: "He created the heavens without pillars you see," he said: It is upon pillars that you do not see.

12091 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa’ narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "Without pillars," he says: [There are] pillars.

And the second interpretation:

12092 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Azhar ibn Marwan narrated to us, ‘Abd al-A‘la narrated to us, Sa‘id narrated to us, from Qatada, from al-Hasan—and this is the statement of Qatada—regarding "without pillars you see," that they both used to say: He created it without pillars; He said to it: "Arise," so it arose.

His saying, the Exalted: "Then He established [Himself]."

12093 - ‘Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja‘far narrated to us, from al-Rabi‘, from Abu al-‘Aliyah, regarding His saying: "Then He established [himself]," he says: He rose [above]. And it was narrated from al-Hasan and al-Rabi‘ ibn Anas the same.

12094 - My father narrated to us, Hisham ibn Khalid narrated to us, Shu‘ayb ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Ibn Abi ‘Arubah, from Qatada, regarding the saying of Allah: "Then He established [himself] on the Throne," he said: [It was on] the seventh day.

12095 - Yazid ibn Sinan al-Basri, a resident of Egypt, narrated to us, Yazid ibn Abi Hakim narrated to us, narrated to us

Notes

(1). Ibn Kathir said: It is passed on as it came, without modality (takyif), without anthropomorphism (tashbih), without negation (ta‘til), and without representation (tamthil). Allah is far above all, in high exaltation - 4/352.
