When they brought him out to the wilderness, they revealed their true nature toward him. Once they had brought him out, and he was dear to them, they took him to the wilderness and showed him hostility. One of them began to strike him, and he would cry out for help to another, who would then strike him. He found none among them to show him mercy. They beat him until they almost killed him, and he began to cry out: "O my father, O Jacob! If you only knew what the sons of the handmaids have done to your son!" When they were about to kill him, Judah said: "Have you not given me your pledge that you would not kill him?" So they took him toward the pit to throw him into it. They began to lower him into the well, and he clung to the edge of the well, but they tied his hands and stripped off his shirt. He said: "O my brothers, leave me my shirt so that I may cover myself with it in the pit." They said to him: "Call upon the eleven stars, the sun, and the moon to comfort you!" He said: "I see nothing." Then they lowered him into the well. When he reached the middle of it, they threw him, intending for him to die. There was water in the well, and he fell into it, so it did not harm him. Then he took shelter on a rock inside the well and stood upon it. He began to weep, and his brothers called out to him, so he thought mercy had overcome them and answered them. They intended to crush him with a rock, but Judah stood up and prevented them, saying: "You have given me a pledge that you would not kill him." Thus, Judah used to bring him food.
His saying, the Almighty: "And We inspired to him, 'You will surely inform them of this affair of theirs while they do not perceive.'"
11377 - Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, [saying] Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, [saying] Sa'id narrated, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "And We inspired to him, 'You will surely inform them of this affair of theirs'"—he said: Allah inspired him with a revelation while he was in the pit, and that revelation eased for him what had been done to him.
11378 - Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, [saying] Yahya ibn Khalaf narrated to us, [saying] Abu 'Asim narrated to us, from 'Isa ibn Maymun, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding "And We inspired to him"—he said: To Joseph.
11379 - My father narrated to us, [saying] Hisham ibn Khalid narrated to us, [saying] Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq narrated to us, [saying] Ibn Abi 'Aruba narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding "And We inspired to him, 'You will surely inform them of this affair of theirs'"—the revelation came to him from Allah while he was in the well concerning what they intended to do to him, and they do not perceive what Allah had revealed to His messenger concerning their affair.
11380 - My father mentioned it from Abu Hudhayfah, from Shibl, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding "And We inspired to him"—to Joseph: "You will surely inform them of this affair of theirs."
