And ‘Ikrimah said: Pregnancy is nine months. And regarding "what the wombs diminish and what they grow," he said: If she sheds blood, it diminishes from the prescribed period (idda), and if she does not shed blood, the prescribed period is completed.
12164 - al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali ibn ‘Affan narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah (meaning ibn Hisham) narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak regarding: "And what the wombs diminish," he said: What is less than nine months is a diminution (ghayd).

His saying, the Exalted: "And what they grow."
12166 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Ibn Numayr narrated to us, from Humayd ibn Sulayman, from Mujahid regarding "and what they grow," he said: The cessation of the menstrual cycle, so she does not see it until she gives birth.
12167 - al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali ibn ‘Affan narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Hisham narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak regarding his saying: "And what they grow," he said: What is above nine is an increase (ziyadah).
12168 - Muhammad ibn ‘Ammar ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Abu al-Walid narrated to us, Abu Zayd narrated to us, from ‘Asim, from ‘Ikrimah regarding this verse: "and what they grow," he said: For every day she menstruated during her pregnancy, she has a day added while she is in her state of purity, until she completes nine months in a state of purity.
12169 - al-Hasan ibn ‘Arafah narrated to us, Marwan ibn Shuja‘ narrated to us, from Khusayf, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah: "He knows what every female bears and what the wombs diminish and what they grow," he said: The count of every day she sees blood in while she is pregnant is considered an increase in the duration of the pregnancy.
12170 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Nasr ibn ‘Ali narrated to us, ‘Umar ibn Hamzah, a shaykh from Banu Qays, narrated to us, Dawud ibn Abi Hind narrated to us, from Makhul, he said: The fetus in its mother’s womb does not beg, nor does it grieve, nor is it distressed; rather, its sustenance comes to it in its mother’s womb from the blood of her menstruation. That is why a pregnant woman does not menstruate. When it falls to the earth, it cries out (istahalla), and its crying is an objection to its place. When its umbilical cord is cut, Allah shifts its sustenance to its mother’s breast, and it eats it. When it reaches [adulthood], it says: "Is it death or killing?" He said: "How will I have sustenance?" Makhul says: "Woe to you! He nourished you while you were in your mother’s womb and while you were a small child until you became strong and possessed intellect, then you said: 'Is it death or killing? Where will I have sustenance?'" Then Makhul recited: "He knows what every female bears and what the wombs diminish and what they grow. And everything with Him is by a measure."
