He said: Moses (peace be upon him) informed them from his Lord, the Almighty and Exalted, that if they were grateful for the blessing, He would increase them from His bounty, expand their provision, and give them dominance over the worlds.
12217 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you'" he said: It is a right upon Allah that He gives to those who ask Him and increases those who are grateful to Him. Allah is the Giver of blessings who loves the grateful, so be grateful to Allah for His blessings.
12218 - From Sufyan al-Thawri (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you" he said: Let not your thoughts go toward worldly things, for they are more insignificant to Allah than that; rather, He says: If you are grateful for this blessing, as it is from Me, I will increase you in my obedience.
His saying, the Exalted: "'Ad and Thamud"
12219 - From Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to recite it as: "'Ad and Thamud and those after them—none knows them except Allah." He said: The genealogists lied.
12220 - From 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) he said: We have not found anyone who knows what is beyond Ma'd ibn 'Adnan.
His saying, the Exalted: "And they said, 'Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent.'"
12221 - From Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the verse, he said: When they heard the Book of Allah, they were amazed and put their hands to their mouths and said, "Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and indeed we are, concerning that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt." They mean: We do not believe you in what you have brought to us, for we have strong doubt regarding it.
His saying, the Exalted: "Their messengers came to them with clear proofs."
12222 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Their messengers came to them with clear proofs, so they put their hands to their mouths." He said: They denied their messengers regarding the clear proofs they brought them, and they rejected them with their mouths, saying, "Indeed, we are, concerning that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt." They denied [Him], while there is no doubt in Allah, the Almighty and Exalted. Is there [any doubt] in the One who created the heavens and the earth? And [who] sent down water from the sky, and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you, and showed you of the blessings and clear signs that which [makes it so that] one does not doubt in Allah, the Almighty and Exalted.

قَالَ: أخبرهم موسى عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ عَنْ ربه عزّ وجل، أنهم إِنَّ شكروا النعمة، زادهم مِنْ فَضَّلَهُ وأوسع لَهُمْ في الرزق، وأظهرهم عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ «١» .
١٢٢١٧ - عَنْ قَتَادَة- رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ- فِي قَوْلِهِ: وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمْ لَئِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ لأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ قَالَ: حق عَلَى الله إِنَّ يعطي مِنْ سأله ويزيد مِنْ شكره، والله منعم يحب الشاكرين، فاشكروا لله نعمه «٢» .
١٢٢١٨ - عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فِي قَوْلِهِ: لَئِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ لأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ قَالَ: لا تَذْهَبْ أَنْفُسكُمْ إِلَى الدُّنْيَا فإنها أهون عَلَى الله مِنْ ذَلِكَ، ولكن يَقُولُ: لَئِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ هذه النعمة إنها مني لأزيدنكم من طاعتي «٣» .
قوله تعالى: عاد وَثَمُودَ
١٢٢١٩ - عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ- رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ- أَنَّهُ كَانَ يقرؤها «عادا وثمودا والذين مِنْ بعدهم لا يعلمهم إلا الله» قَالَ: كذب النسابون.
١٢٢٢٠ - عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ- رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ- قَالَ: مَا وَجَدْنَا أَحَدًا يَعْرِفُ مَا وَرَاءَ مَعْدِ بن عدنان «٤» .
قَوْلهُ تَعَالَى: وَقَالُوا إِنَّا كَفَرْنَا بِمَا أُرْسِلْتُمْ بِهِ.
١٢٢٢١ - عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ- رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا- في الآية قَالَ: لما سمعوا كتاب الله، عجبوا ورجعوا بأيديهم إلى أفواههم، وَقَالُوا إِنَّا كَفَرْنَا بِمَا أُرْسِلْتُمْ بِهِ وَإِنَّا لَفِي شَكٍّ مِمَّا تَدْعُونَنَا إِلَيْهِ مُرِيبٍ يقولون: لا نصدقكم فيما جئتم به، فإن عندنا فيه شكًا قويًا.
قَوْلهُ تَعَالَى: جَاءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُمْ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ ... «٥» .
١٢٢٢٢ - عَنْ قَتَادَة- رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ- جَاءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُمْ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَرَدُّوا أَيْدِيَهُمْ فِي أَفْوَاهِهِمْ قَالَ: كذبوا رسلهم بما جاءوهم مِنَ البينات، فردوه عَلَيْهِمْ بأفواههم وقالوا: إِنَّا لَفِي شَكٍّ مِمَّا تَدْعُونَنَا إِلَيْهِ مُرِيبٍ وكذبوا مَا في الله عزّ وجل شك، أفي مِنْ فطر السموات وَالْأَرْضِ؟ وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاء مَاء فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ رِزْقًا لَكُمْ وَأَظْهَرَ لَكُمْ مِنَ النعم والآلاء الظاهرة مَا لا يشك في الله عزّ وجل «٦» .
