His saying, the Almighty: "And they brought upon his shirt false blood."

11390 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, [saying] Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Simak, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And they brought upon his shirt false blood"—he said: Had the beast eaten him, it would have torn his shirt.

11391 - al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, [saying] 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, from Isra'il, from Simak, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "false blood"—he said: It was the blood of a young animal. It was also narrated from Mujahid that he said: The young of a sheep.

11392 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, [saying] Abu Usamah narrated to us—I believe—from Simak, from al-Sha'bi, [who] said: There were three signs on Joseph's shirt when they brought his shirt to his father and said: "The wolf ate him." His father said: "Had the wolf eaten him, it would have torn his shirt."

11393 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, [saying] Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, [saying] Sa'id narrated, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And they brought upon his shirt false blood"—he said: They hunted a gazelle and slaughtered it, then they smeared the shirt with its blood. He began turning the shirt over and saying: "I see no trace of a canine tooth nor a claw. This is indeed a merciful wolf."

11394 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, [saying] al-Husayn ibn 'Ali narrated to us, [saying] 'Amir narrated, from Asbat, from al-Suddi, [who] said: The old man wept and cried out at the top of his voice, then said: "Where is the shirt?" They brought his shirt with false blood on it. He took the shirt and threw it upon his face, then he wept until he dyed his face with the blood from the shirt. Then he said: "This wolf, O my sons, is indeed merciful. How could he eat his flesh and not tear his shirt?"

His saying, the Almighty: "[Jacob] said, 'Rather, your souls have enticed you to something'"

11395 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying] Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us, [saying] Bishr ibn 'Amarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something"—he said: Your souls have ordered you [to do this].

11396 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, [saying] Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, [saying] Sa'id ibn Bashir informed us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "[Jacob] said, 'Rather, your souls have enticed you to something'"—meaning: Your souls have beautified a matter for you. "So patience is most fitting."
