were the people of a thicket [ghaydah], and most of their trees were of the dum [theban] variety. Their messenger, as far as has reached us, was Shu'ayb; he was sent to them and to the people of Madyan. He was sent to two nations of people, and they were punished with two different punishments. As for the people of Madyan, the blast took them. As for the companions of the al-Aykah, they were people of dense, intertwined trees. It was mentioned to us that the heat was unleashed upon them for seven days, during which no shade could protect them and nothing could shield them from it. Allah then sent a cloud over them, and they began to seek comfort from it, so Allah made it a punishment for them. He sent fire upon them, which blazed over them and consumed them. That is the punishment of the day of the shadow, for it was the punishment of a great day.

12431 - From Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "The companions of the al-Aykah," he said: The thicket [al-ghaydah].

12433 - From Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi, he said: The people of Madyan were punished with three types of punishment. The earthquake [al-rajfah] seized them in their dwellings until they came out of them. When they came out, they were struck with severe panic, and they feared that if they entered their houses, they would collapse upon them. So Allah sent the shadow upon them. A man entered beneath it and said: "I have not seen a shade cooler or better than this day! ... Come, O people!" So they all entered beneath the shadow, then He shouted at them with a single blast, and they all died.

His saying: "And indeed, they are both on a clear, marked path."
