Volume 7 · Page 175[Surah al-Hijr (15): Verse 87]

Translation · EN

al-Hijr: "Do not enter upon these people unless you are weeping; if you are not weeping, then do not enter upon them, lest there befall you the like of what befell them."

His saying: "And We have certainly given you seven of the often-repeated [al-mathani]."

12441 - From Ali ibn Abi Talib regarding His saying: "And We have certainly given you seven of the often-repeated [al-mathani]," he said: It is the Opening of the Book [al-Fatihah].

12442 - By way of al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "And We have certainly given you seven of the often-repeated [al-mathani]," he said: The Opening of the Book is seven verses. It is only called the 'often-repeated' [al-mathani] because it is repeated every time one recites the Qur'an. It was said to al-Rabi': They say it refers to the seven long surahs. He said: This verse was revealed, yet none of the long ones had been revealed yet.

12443 - From Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "And We have certainly given you seven of the often-repeated [al-mathani]," he said: They are the seven long surahs. None were given them except the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, though Moses was given two of them.

12444 - From Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "seven of the often-repeated [al-mathani]," he said: The seven long ones: al-Baqarah, Al 'Imran, al-Nisa', al-Ma'idah, al-An'am, al-A'raf, and Yunus. It was said to Ibn Jubayr: What is the meaning of His saying: "the often-repeated [al-mathani]"? He said: Because the ordinances and the stories are repeated within them.

12445 - From Sufyan: The often-repeated [al-mathani]: al-Baqarah, Al 'Imran, al-Nisa', al-Ma'idah, al-An'am, al-A'raf, and Bara'ah and al-Anfal are considered one surah.

12446 - By way of Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "seven of the often-repeated [al-mathani]," he said: The seven long ones. I asked: Why are they called the often-repeated [al-mathani]? He said: Because goodness, parables, and lessons are frequently reiterated within them.

12447 - From Ziyad ibn Abi Maryam regarding His saying: "seven of the often-repeated [al-mathani]," he said: I have given you seven other [things]: Command and forbid, give glad tidings and warn, set forth parables, enumerate blessings, and relate the news of the generations.
