His saying: "Do not extend your eyes toward that which We have given to [certain] pairs from among them..."

12448 - It is mentioned from Waki' ibn al-Jarrah, who said: Musa ibn 'Ubaydah narrated to us, from Yazid ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Qusayt, from Abu Rafi', the companion of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said: A guest was hosted by the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and the Prophet had nothing with which to treat him. He sent [someone] to a man among the Jews saying: "Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, says to you: 'Lend me some flour until the crescent of Rajab.'" He said: "No, not without a pledge." I came to the Prophet [and informed him], and he said: "By Allah, I am the trustworthy one of those in the heavens and the trustworthy one of those on earth; had he lent it to me or sold it to me, I would have fulfilled it for him." When I left his presence, this verse was revealed: "Do not extend your eyes toward that which We have given to [certain] pairs from among them, [for] the splendor of the worldly life..." to the end of the verse, as if He were consoling him regarding the world.

12449 - From Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "Do not extend your eyes..." the verse. He said: It prohibits a man from desiring the wealth of his companion.

His saying: "As We had revealed [scriptures] to the partitioners [al-muqtasimin]"

He said: Those who believed in a part and disbelieved in a part: The Jews and the Christians.

His saying: "about what they used to do"

12450 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Abi al-Hawwari narrated to us, Yunus al-Hadhdha' narrated to us, from Abu Hamzah al-Shaybani, from Mu'adh ibn Jabal who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to me: "O Mu'adh, the believer will be asked on the Day of Resurrection about all his efforts, even his applying kohl to his eyes and the small dust/earth on his finger. So let me not find you on the Day of Resurrection as one who is less happy with what Allah has brought than someone else."

His saying: "Who have made the Qur'an into portions [‘idhin]"

12451 - From Mujahid regarding His saying: "Who have made the Qur'an into portions [‘idhin]" he said: They are a group from Quraish who divided the Book of Allah; some of them claimed it was sorcery, some claimed it was soothsaying, and some claimed it was the myths of the ancients.
