and ask them for a share. They said: If they ask us, "What is this?" we will say: Merchandise we acquired from the people of the well. That is [the meaning of] His saying: "And they sold him for a low price."

11416 - Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Hisinjani narrated to us, [saying] 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Ghimr narrated to us, [saying] Mufaddal ibn Fadalah said: I asked him—meaning Abu Sakhr—about His saying: "And they sold him for a low price," he said: When they threw him into the well, they saw the caravan approaching. When the people of the caravan sent their water-drawer and he let down his bucket, he sensed the boy and called his companions. When they arrived, Joseph's brothers said to them: "This boy who is in the well is a slave of ours, so would you like to buy him from us?" And they kept their sale a secret among themselves.

His saying, the Almighty: "And Allah is All-Aware of what they do."

11417 - Muhammad ibn al-Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, [saying] Zunayj narrated to us, [saying] Salamah narrated to us, [saying] Muhammad ibn Ishaq: "All-Aware," meaning: He knew what they were concealing.

His saying, the Almighty: "And they sold him for a low price."

11418 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, [saying] Ibn Idris narrated to us, from his father, from 'Atiyyah, from his father, regarding "and they sold him": He said, they sold him.

11419 - My father narrated to us, [saying] Musa ibn Isma'il narrated to us, [saying] Mubarak narrated to us, from al-Hasan, regarding the saying of Allah: "And they sold him": He said, his brothers did not sell him; rather, the merchants sold him.

His saying, the Almighty: "for a low price"

11420 - Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tahrani narrated to us, [saying] Hafs ibn 'Umar al-'Adani informed us, [saying] al-Hakam ibn Aban narrated to us, from 'Ikrimah, regarding the saying of Allah the Almighty: "And they sold him for a low price, a few counted dirhams," he said: Joseph's worth was debased when he was sold for twenty dirhams—and it was narrated from Abu Sakhr similarly.

11421 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, [saying] Ibn Idris narrated to us, from his father, from 'Atiyyah, regarding "for a low price," he said: Injustice.

11422 - Al-Ashajj narrated to us, [saying] Hani' ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak: "Low price": The forbidden; his price was forbidden.
