Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 7 · Page 199[Surah An-Nahl (16): Verse 83]

Translation · EN

The Bedouin said: Yes. He said: "And Allah has made for you from the skins of the cattle houses, which you find light." The Bedouin said: Yes. Then he recited to him; he said 'yes' to all of it, until he reached: "Thus does He complete His favor upon you that you might submit." Then the Bedouin turned away, so Allah revealed: "They recognize the favor of Allah, then they deny it, and most of them are the disbelievers."

His saying, the Almighty: "They recognize the favor of Allah, then they deny it"

12621 - From Mujahid, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "They recognize the favor of Allah, then they deny it," he said: It refers to dwellings, cattle, the provisions derived from them, the garments of iron, and clothing. The disbelievers of Quraish recognize this, then they deny it by saying: "This was for our forefathers, so they bequeathed it to us."

12622 - From 'Awn ibn 'Abd Allah, regarding His saying: "They recognize the favor of Allah, then they deny it," he said: Their denying it is when a man says: "If it were not for so-and-so, such-and-such would have happened to me," and "If it were not for so-and-so, I would not have obtained such-and-such."

His saying, the Almighty: "And [mention] the day when We will raise from every nation a witness"

12623 - From Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And [mention] the day when We will raise from every nation a witness," he said: Their witness is their prophet, [testifying] that he had conveyed the messages of his Lord. Allah said: "And We will bring you as a witness against these [people]." He said: It was mentioned to us that the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would have his eyes stream with tears when he recited this verse.

12624 - From Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "And when those who wronged see the punishment, it will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved," he said: This is like His saying: "This is a Day on which they will not speak, nor will it be permitted for them to offer excuses."

His saying, the Almighty: "Then they will offer their words"

12625 - From Mujahid, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "Then they will offer their words," he said: They will speak to them.

12626 - From Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And they will offer to Allah, that Day, submission," he says: They will be humbled and submit on that Day.
