peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, moved away from his companion 'Uthman towards where he had placed his head, and he began to shake his head as if trying to grasp what was being said to him. When he finished his task, the gaze of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, became fixed towards the sky as it had the first time. He followed it with his gaze until it disappeared into the sky, then he turned to 'Uthman as he was in his first sitting. 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, asked him, and he said: "Gabriel came to me just now."
He asked: "What did he say to you?" He said: "Indeed, Allah commands justice and excellence..." up to His saying: "...you may remember." 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "That was when faith settled in my heart and I loved Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him."
12634 - Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, 'Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, Shahr narrated to us, 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas narrated to me, saying: While the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was sitting in the courtyard of his house, 'Uthman ibn Maz'un passed by and smiled at the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to him: "Will you not sit?" He replied: "Yes." He said: So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sat facing him. While he was speaking to him, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, fixed his gaze towards the sky. He looked at the sky for a moment, then began to lower his gaze until he placed it on his right on the ground. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, turned away from his companion 'Uthman towards where he had placed his gaze, and began to shake his head as if he were trying to grasp what was being said to him, while Ibn Maz'un watched. When he finished his task and grasped what was said to him, the gaze of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, became fixed towards the sky as it had the first time. He followed it with his gaze until it disappeared into the sky, then he turned to 'Uthman in his first sitting and said: "O Muhammad, what was the matter while I was sitting with you? I have never seen you act as you did this morning!" He said: "And what did you see me do?" He said: "I saw you fix your gaze towards the sky, then you placed it where you placed it on your right, so you turned towards it and left me, and you began to shake your head as if you were trying to grasp something being said to you." He said: "And you noticed that?" 'Uthman said: "Yes." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "The Messenger of Allah [Gabriel] came to me just now while you were sitting." He asked: "The Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes." He asked: "What did he say to you?" He said: "Indeed, Allah commands justice, excellence, and the giving to relatives, and He forbids immorality, bad conduct, and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will remember." 'Uthman said: "That was when faith settled in my heart, and I loved Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him."
