His saying, the Almighty: "And do not be like her who unraveled her spun thread."
12641 - From Abu Bakr ibn Hafs, who said: Sa'ida al-Asadiyya was a woman who was mentally unstable, gathering hair and fiber, so this verse was revealed: "And do not be like her who unraveled her spun thread..." the verse.
12642 - From al-Suddi regarding His saying: "And do not be like her who unraveled her spun thread," he said: She was a woman in Mecca who was called the "Khariqa" of Mecca; she used to spin, and when she had twisted her thread, she would unravel it.
12643 - From Mujahid regarding His saying: "And do not be like her who unraveled her spun thread," he said: She unraveled her rope after she had twisted it.
His saying, the Almighty: "You take your oaths as a deception between you."
12644 - From Qatada regarding the verse, he said: If you heard of a woman who unraveled her thread after twisting it, you would say: How foolish she is! This is a parable Allah struck for those who break their covenant. Regarding His saying: "You take your oaths as a deception between you," he said: Betrayal and treachery.
His saying, the Almighty: "That a community may be more numerous than [another] community."
12645 - From Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, regarding His saying: "That a community may be more numerous than [another] community," he said: One group of people being more numerous than another.
12646 - From Mujahid, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "That a community may be more numerous than [another] community," he said: They used to form alliances with allies, and when they found others who were more numerous and more powerful, they would break the alliance of the former and form an alliance with the latter, who were more powerful. So they were forbidden from that.
12647 - From Sa'id ibn Jubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding the verse, he said: Do not be, in breaking a covenant, like the one who unraveled her thread after its strength into broken pieces—meaning after she had twisted it. "You take your oaths," meaning the covenant, "as a deception between you," meaning between the people of the covenant, meaning a plot or a trick to introduce a defect to justify breaking the covenant thereby. "That a community may be more numerous than [another] community," meaning more numerous. "Allah only tests you thereby," meaning by the multitude. "And He will surely make clear to you on the Day of Resurrection that over which you used to differ. And if Allah had willed, He could have made you one community," meaning the Muslims and the polytheists, one community, meaning the religion of Islam alone. "But He leads astray whom He wills," meaning from His religion, and they are the polytheists.
