to migrate to Medina, he said to his companions: "Separate from me. Whoever has the strength, let him leave at the end of the night, and whoever does not have the strength, let him go in the early part of the night. If you hear that the land has settled for me, then join me." Bilal the caller to prayer, Khabbab, 'Ammar, and a slave girl from Quraysh who had accepted Islam remained in Mecca. The polytheists and Abu Jahl took them. They offered Bilal [the choice] to disbelieve, but he refused. They began placing an iron coat of mail on him in the sun, then they would clothe him in it. When they clothed him in it, he would say, "One... One." As for Khabbab, they began dragging him through the thorns. As for 'Ammar, he spoke to them a word that pleased them out of taqiyyah (dissimulation). As for the slave girl, Abu Jahl drove four stakes for her, then stretched her out and drove a spear into her private part until he killed her. Then they let go of Bilal, Khabbab, and 'Ammar, so they joined the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and informed him of what had happened to them. 'Ammar felt intense distress regarding what he had said, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to him: "How was your heart when you said what you said? Was it at ease with what you said or not?" He said, "No." He said, "And Allah revealed: 'Except for one who is forced, while his heart is secure in faith.'"
12667 - From the path of Abu 'Ubaydah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Ammar, from his father, he said: The polytheists took 'Ammar ibn Yasir and did not leave him until he insulted the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and mentioned their idols with good. Then they left him. When he came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, he said, "What is behind you?" He said, "Evil. I did not leave until I insulted you and mentioned their idols with good." He said, "How do you find your heart?" He said, "Secure in faith." He said, "If they return, then you return [to what you said]." Then was revealed: "Except for one who is forced, while his heart is secure in faith."
12668 - From Muhammad ibn Sirin, he said: This verse, "Except for one who is forced," was revealed regarding 'Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah.
12669 - From Mujahid, he said: This verse was revealed regarding people from the people of Mecca who believed, and some of the Companions in Medina wrote to them: "If you emigrate, for we do not consider you to be among us until you emigrate to us." They left intending Medina, but Quraysh caught up with them on the way and tempted them, so they disbelieved under duress. Regarding them, this verse was revealed.
12670 - From the path of 'Ali, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Whoever disbelieves in Allah..." to the verse.
