He said: Allah, may He be exalted, has informed us that whoever disbelieves in Allah after having believed, upon him is wrath from Allah and for him is a great punishment. As for the one who is forced, who spoke with his tongue while his heart disagreed with it in faith, in order to be saved by that from his enemy, then there is no blame upon him, because Allah, may He be exalted, only holds servants accountable for what their hearts have committed.
- From Ka'b, he said: I was with 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, and he said: "Make us fear, O Ka'b." I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, is there not among you the Book of Allah and the judgment of His Messenger?" He said: "Yes, but make us fear." I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, if you were to meet the Day of Resurrection with the deeds of seventy prophets, you would still belittle your deeds because of what you see." He said: "Increase us." I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, if an opening the size of a bull's nostril were opened from Hell in the East, and a man was in the West, his brain would boil until it flowed from its heat." He said: "Increase us." I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, Hell will exhale a single breath on the Day of Resurrection, and there will remain no angel brought near nor messenger prophet except that he will fall down kneeling on his knees, to the point that Ibrahim, His Friend, will fall down kneeling on his knees and say: 'My soul... My soul... I do not ask of You today except for my own soul.'" 'Umar bowed his head for a long time. I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, do you not find this in the Book of Allah?" He said: "How?" I said: "The saying of Allah in this verse: 'On the Day when every soul will come disputing for itself, and every soul will be fully compensated for what it did, and they will not be wronged.'"
- From 'Atiyyah, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And Allah presents an example: a city," he said: "It is Mecca. Do you not see that He said: 'And there had certainly come to them a messenger from among themselves, but they denied him.'"
- From Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "So Allah made it taste the garment of hunger and fear," he said: "Allah seized them with hunger, fear, and killing." And regarding His saying: "And there had certainly come to them a messenger from among themselves, but they denied him," he said: "Yes, by Allah, they knew his lineage and his affair."
- From Salim ibn 'Umar, he said: I accompanied Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, while she was leaving from Mecca to Medina, and it was reported that 'Uthman had been killed, so she turned back. She said: "Take me back, for by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, it is the city that Allah said: 'a city that was safe and secure'... to the end of the verse."
- From Ibn Shihab, he said: The city that Allah mentioned, "was safe and secure," is Yathrib.
