directly, and You gave Dāwūd a great kingdom and softened iron for him and subjected the mountains to him, and You gave Sulaymān a great kingdom and subjected the jinn, mankind, and the devils to him, and subjected the winds to him, and gave him a kingdom that should not belong to anyone after him, and You taught ʿĪsā the Torah and the Gospel and made him heal the blind and the leper and bring the dead to life by Your permission, and You protected him and his mother from the accursed Satan, so Satan had no path over them. His Lord, Mighty and Majestic is He, said to him: I have already taken you as a friend (khalīl), and it is written in the Torah: The Beloved of the Most Merciful. I have sent you to all people as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, and I have expanded for you your breast, removed from you your burden, and raised for you your mention, so that I am not mentioned except that you are mentioned with Me. I have made your nation the best nation produced for mankind, and I have made it such that no sermon is valid for your nation until they testify that you are My servant and My messenger. I have made from your nation peoples whose hearts are their Bibles, and I have made you the first of the prophets in creation and the last of them in being sent, and the first of them for whom judgment will be passed. I have given you the seven oft-repeated verses (al-sabʿ al-mathānī) which I did not give to any prophet before you, and I have given you the concluding verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah from a treasure beneath the Throne which I did not give to any prophet before you, and I have given you al-Kawthar. I have given you eight shares: Islam, migration (hijra), striving (jihād), prayer (ṣalāt), charity (ṣadaqa), fasting Ramaḍān, enjoining good, and forbidding evil, and I have made you the opener and the sealer. The Prophet, may Allāh bless him and grant him peace, said: My Lord favored me and sent me as a mercy to the worlds, and to all people as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner. He cast terror into the heart of my enemy from a distance of a month's journey, made the spoils of war lawful for me—which were not lawful for anyone before me—and made the entire earth for me a place of prostration and a means of purification. I was given the openers of speech, its closers, and its comprehensive words. My nation was presented to me, so the follower and the followed were not hidden from me. I saw them coming upon a people wearing hair, and I saw them coming upon a people with broad faces and small eyes, as if their eyes had been pierced with a needle. What they will encounter after me was not hidden from me. I was commanded with fifty prayers. When he returned to Mūsā, peace be upon him, he said: With what were you commanded? He said: With fifty prayers. He said: Return to your Lord and ask Him for a reduction, for your nation is the weakest of nations; I have encountered severity from the Children of Israel. The Prophet, may Allāh bless him and grant him peace, returned to his Lord and asked Him for a reduction, so He removed ten from him. Then he returned to Mūsā and said: With how many were you commanded? He said: With forty. He said: Return to your Lord and ask Him for a reduction. He returned, and He removed ten from him, until He made them five. He said: Return to your Lord and ask Him for a reduction. He said: I have returned to my Lord until I felt shy before Him, so I will not return to Him. It was said to him: Know that just as you have restrained yourself to five prayers, they shall suffice for you as fifty prayers, and every good deed is worth ten times its like. So Muḥammad, may Allāh bless him and grant him peace, was satisfied with complete satisfaction.
